WENDY’S DRESSMAKERS

UNCOMMON “SOILED LINEN BAG.”

Tink has made a jolly present for Wendy, and we think you would like to copy it for Mother. It js a bag for soiled linen, with an amusing clothes line decoration appliqued on one side, as you see in the sketch. _ You will need a piece of| crash, Tom. wide and 24in. long; a pieqe of casement cloth in a bright colour, exactly the same size, for the lining; two flat canes, 16in. long; two lengths of cotton braid, the same colour as the lining, for the hafidles of the bag; some odd scraps of bright coloured materials for the appliqued “clothes” on the line; and some oddments of brown,_ black, green and red wools. Quite a big order, isn’t Work the trimming on the side of the bag before making it up. Fold the crash in half, and rule two vertical lines down each side of the top fold,

two inches away from the edge, making each line seven inches long. These are for the supports of the “clothes-line. Next draw the clothes-line across the crash from one post to the other. Work the line in 'black wool stem-stitch; and the supports in brown wool satin-stitch, as shown in Diagram C, making a little Satin-stitch knob on top to finish each post. Now cut out the '‘clothes” —the picture shows you the different shapes. Tack them in place, as shown in Diagram A, '*then buttonhole them round firmly, like Diagram B. Work wee black wool clothes-pegs to join them to the line, then do a line, of grasses, and tiny flowers along the bottom of the decoration; the grasses are just green stroke-stitches and the flowers are red French knots. See Diagram D. Sew the edges of the crash together on the wrong side to make a bag; then do the same with the lining. Slip the lining inside the outer cover taking care to get the two wrong sides facing, and join along the top. Make a hem each side of the top through which you can slip the canes; then sew a length of braid to each cane io form handles.
