Mrs. H. R. Kemp wore a frock of black crepe satin on Friday evening when she entertained a few friends at bridge, among those present being Mesdames powdrell, C. Bayley, Rowe, T. H. McWilliams, Harpur (Marton), W- M. Winks and J. Bayley.

Mrs. L. B. Dewis entertained friends at tea on Thursday afternoon. She wore a pretty frock of bottle green crepe ana. Mesdames Walter Syme, J. Ogle, N. F. Stead, A. K. North, A. Harvey, W. Jobson, Beck and T. R- Overton were among those present.

Mrs. and Miss I. Wallace, Auckland, who have been visiting Hawera for some weeks, returned home on Tuesday. They were accompanied by Miss B. Allom, Hawera.

Mrs. C. C. Jackson, Dominion president of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, will arrive on Wednesday at Hawera, where she will spend a few days as the guest of Mrs. H. Thrush.

Miss N. Smith, Normanby, attended the coming-of-age party for Miss V. Jones at New Plymouth on Monday.

Miss K. Hickey has returned to Normanby after spending several days at Manaia for the jubilee celebrations.

Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Sutton returned last week-end after spending two weeks at Auckland and Rotorua.

The “bring and buy” afternoon at the club last Saturday proved quite successful and the library fund, should benefit materially.

Mrs. Harpur, Marton, who had been Mrs. T. H. McWilliams’ guest for a week, returned home on Wednesday.

Cn Friday afternoon of last week Mrs. W. M. Thomson entertained a few friends at tea, Mrs. F. Wylds, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Rowe, Mrs. Woodward, Mrs. L. J. Bull and Mrs. D. G. Smart being among those present.

Mrs. G. A. Burgess, South Road, was hostess at an “at home” on Tuesday afternoon, when she received her guests wearing a smart mode ..in black. Miss Eva Burgess wore deep claret crepe de chine. Mesdames W. F. Buist, F. W. Sutton, A. Woodward, Welsh, F. Wylds and A. K. Fyson were among the visitors.

Mr. and Mrs. T. Wilson, Ararata, celebrated the silver jubilee of their wedding on Friday of last v.eek. The evening was passed with games, competitions and elocutionary and musical items. Tho toast of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson was proposed 'by Mr. Li. Foy, who presented them with a supper set.

Mrs. W. J. Bright entertained a number of friends at afternoon tea last Saturday, wearing a pretty frock of floral crepe de chine in green tones. Autumn leaves and chrysanthemums in warm golden tones and berries made bright decorations. Those present were Mrs. H. McWilliams, Mrs. Harpur, (Marton), Mrs. McLean (Wellington), Mrs. L. J. Bull, Miss Evelyn Buist. Mrs. H. D. Cameron, Mrs. Woodward and Mrs, R. Baigent.

Miss Frances Macdonald, _ who is shortly leaving the Hawera district to reside at Bell Block, was farewelled by fellow-members of the St. Mary’s Young Women’s Bible Class at a social evening at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Death, Lake Road, during the week. A silver serviette ring was presented to Miss Macdonald by the leader of the club, Miss G. Death, who spoke of the sterling work the guest had done among the junior members.

On Tuesday morning Mrs. D. G. Smart was hostess at a very pleasant morning tea party tor her guest, Mrs. J. Brodie, the hostess wearing a smart jumper suit in a new green tone. Mrs. Brodie’s frock was a sand-coloured crepe de chine flowered in autumn tonings. Among those present were Mesdames Burgess, F. W. Sutton, Arthur Coleman, W. O. Williams, H. R- Kemp, Geo. Duncan, C. Bayley and Miss Hay-Mackenzie.

PLUNKET PROGRESS.

During Miss Pattrick’s visit to Hawera early in the week much good work iwas done in the local branch of the plunket Society, future progressive arrangements were discussed and new ideas distributed. Although her stay was a short one, Miss Pattrick, who is the director of Plunket nursing for New Zealand, covered a remarkable lot of ground. Apart from visiting many cases and interviewing scores of moth-

ers, she was entertained at lunch at the Women’s Club, where she gave a very interesting short address on her tour abroad. Mrs. Page welcomed her on behalf of the club. Others taking part in the luncheon were Mesdamcs Beck, Henderson, Adams, C. Freyberg, J. Houston, W. Jobson, L. A. Ablett, Evans, Nurse McCall a; d Miss Glenn. Later Mies Pattrick was the guest of honour at a tea given by the Hawera Plunket Committee at the Carlton. Mrs. W. M. Winks (retiring president) presiding. The guest of the afternoon gave a talk on the aiifls and interests of the society, and the possibility of establishing an ante-natal clinic in Hawera in conjunction with the present excellent Plunket service was also discussed. Mesdames Henderson, Beck, Fyfe, H. Cressey, N. I Stead, Bardsley, A. K. Fyson, W. Jobson, Carter, A. Corrigan, Veitch, Storm, Humphries, Trim, Pickett, S. A. Chisholm, Haseltine, and B. Campbell were among those at tea.

Mrs. R. R. Henderson has been elected president of the Haw.era branch of the society in place of Mrs. W. M. R inks,

who has resigned after 11 years of office.

NORMANBY SOCIAL ITEMS.

On Thursday evening an enjoyable dance was held in the town hall in aid of the Normanby Football Club. Music was supplied by Walden’s Orchestra and a company of Maoris delighted all piesent with hakas and poi dances.

Mrs. D. M. Cowie left during the week for Dunedin, where she will spend a fortnight’s hloiday.

Miss F. Ward, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs. F. W. Riddle.
