STRATFORD ITEMS

Mrs. F. Newland, Wharehuia, accompanied by Miss Daisy Newland and Miss D. Davey, returned during the week from an extended motor tour of Hawke’s Bay and Wellington districts.

Mrs. F. Phillips has returned to Wellington after spending a holiday with her mother, Mrs. A. Goble, Cardiff.

Mrs. H. Gadsby, Midhirst, left during the week to stay with her sister in Wellington.

Mrs. M. G. Trotter, Stratford, has returned from a holiday at Mokoia.

Mrs. E. Mahon, Tariki, is spending a few days with her mother at Durham Road. Mrs. H. Knowles and Miss Lawrence have been elected members of tho executive of the Tariki hall committee, also the social committee.

Mrs. H., Gadsby is holiday-making with her sister in Wellington.

Mr. and Mrs. B. Gernhoefer, Mapui, are visiting relatives in Stratford and surrounding districts.

Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, Mangamiri. have returned after spending a holiday with, Mr. and Mrs. Mclnnes, Hamlet Street.

On Thursday afternoon at the residence o-f Miss Hope Penn, Hamlet Street, a delightful party was given for Miss Stephanie North, who is shortly to be married. Everyone had a jolly time, the guest receiving many presents and o-ood wishes. Some of those present were Misses S. North, guest of honour, Molly Malone, Joan Coleman, Max Skoglund, Margery and Pat Brown, Grace North and Dulcie and Sybil Pearce and Mrs. H. C. North.

A novelty party was arranged at the home of Mrs. R. Masters by Misses M. Malone, J. Bremner, C. Uniacke and Z. and 0. Masters in honour of the Blue Baby in the Plunket carnival. The evening was pleasantly spent in playing games and -ping-pong, the guests enjoying themselves thoroughly. Among those present were Mesdames Fredric, McCullough, Shaw, Marsh, R. Curtis and Mieses E. Hazeldine, S. V. Mann, L. Penn, H. Bremner, J. Jackson, J. Coleman, R. Furrie, M. Lyons and H. Hoole,

A successful euchre and dance party was held in the Midhirst hall by the basketball club, on Monday. Twentyeight tables were occupied at euchre. The prizes were won by Miss I. Hamilon 1, Miss C. Theobold 2, Mrs. Piper consolation; Mr. D. Tempero 1, Mr. Jensen and Mr. Shottcr 2. The second prize was re-donated to the club. Supper was provided by members of the club. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Z. Tapp and Mr. Kovaleski. Music was supplied by local talent.

A plunket dance was held at Midhirst on Wednesday night, there being a fair attendance, despite the weather. The committee, Mesdames H. Graham, Boyles, Schumacher, A. Guthrie, Tapp, Cliff, Phillips and J. Costelli, were responsible for the decorations, which were tastefully arranged in blue and white streamers to represent the Plunket Baby’s colours. Mrs. H. Graham was secretary, while Mr. C. Phillips was master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mies R. Griffin and Mr. T. Lobb. Among those present were Mesdames Curtis, Urwin, GriffJones, T. Jones, Clem Phillips, R. Meads; Misses L. Bill (green taffeta), I. Bunning (salmon satin and coatee), D. Phillips (black net),. M. Grey (green satin and coatee), A. Boniface (white satin and net), A. Bunning (lemon crepe senade and coatee), C. Copeland (blue silk and coatee), R. Griffin (floral georgette and coatee), Z. Papp (black satin and coatee), I. Hamblyn (salmon satin), Q. O’Keefe (pink satin), M. Fryda y (green satin and coatee), Kovaleski (green satin and blue net), M. Goble (floral frock), and J. Jones (yellow silk).

The Midhirst branch of the W.D.F.U. held its monthly meeting on Wednesday. There was a good attendance, Mrs. Laird presiding. It was unanimously decided that Mrs. Laird should attend the conference at Wellington next month. Five new members were enrolled and the resignation of the secretary, Mrs. Langlands, was received with regret as Mrs. Langlands had been a valuable member and was largely responsible for the success of the branch. There were several demonstrations during the afternoon, Mrs. Copeland showing how to make beautiful woollen rugs, Mrs. Theobold waterproof cape-making and Miss Lawn how to make useful articles out of sugar bags, while Miss Fryday also demonstrated wonderful punga work. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. C. Symonds, Mrs. L. Vickers and Mrs. Theobold.

Mrs. Furrie had a bridge party on Thursday afternoon, those present being Lady Carncross (Eltham), Mesdames Weir, Carter, Jardine, Pitt, Truby King, Jeffries, Malone, Uniacke, R. Curtis, Miss Carncross and Porritt.

Between 60 and 70 people assembled recently at the residence of Mrs. G. Hunter, East Road, to attend a kitchen tea tendered to Miss D. McCullough, who is shortly to be married. Games, cards and competitions enabled the evening to be passed in a most pleasant fashion. After supper Mr. Hunter wished the young couple good fortune, Messrs. E- Boyde and E. McCullough replying on behalf of Miss McCullough.
