WOMEN’S DIVISION NOTES

URENUI WOMEN’S DIVISION. The Urenui branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held its monthly meeting on Monday. Mrs. Phillips presided over an attendance of over 30. Two members of the Farmers’ Union interviewed the members regarding the field day, when it is anticipated there would be about 100 guests. It was arranged that the ladies would be hostesses at luncheon. Mrs. Jackson, the Dominion president, will speak at a combined meeting next week. OAKURA WOMEN’S DIVISION. The OakuV branch of the Women’s Division of tie Farmers’ Union held its annual social'afternoon. on Wednesday, when all the ladies in the district were invited to be present and children under school age were specially included. There was a happy little gathering in spite of broken weather, and the wee folks turned up in good numbers and thoroughly enjoyed one another’s company and afternoon tea. An informal programme had been arranged and gave much, pleasure. Mrs Brown, Westown, recited several poems, well chosen with regard to the interest of her audience, who received her with enthusiasm. Songs were sung by Mrs. C. J. Harris and Miss Audrey Smith. Afternoon tea was served around the fire amidst social chat and laughter. Members of the branch had each brought a contribution of soap towards the “pound scheme” supplies in New Plymouth, and these were afterwards delivered at the depot by Mrs. W. K. Morris, who reported that they had been gladly accepted as a very opportune donation. A happy little function took place earlier in the month, when Mrs. Knapman gave an afternoon for Miss Haskell, who is to be married shortly. The members made a presentation of a picture to Miss Haskell, who was secretary of the branch last year, and appreciation of her work was expressed by the president, who tendered the good wishes of the branch.

MEETING AT PUKEHO. Mrs. S. George having convened a meeting of ladies in the Pukeho school on Thursday afternoon, Mrs. H. R. Marsh, president of the Inglewood Women’s Division branch, and hon. organiser for North Taranaki, accompanied by Mesdames Grofski, Guilford and Miss McMahon, addressed those present upon the aims, objects and activities of the division. At the conclusion of the address it. was resolved to form a branch, to be known as the Pukeho branch. ... Mrs. S. George was elected president, while Mrs. Goodwin (subject to her approval) was appointed hon. secretary and treasurer. Mesdames L. George and Raven were elected vice-presidents. At the conclusion of the business members were 'handed materials and a demonstration was given upon the making of afternoon tea baskets from raffia and cane. Varied samples of fancy work, arts and crafts were also displayed in which members were keenly interested. Votes of thanks were accorded the visitors for having braved the elements and visited the district. BELL BLOCK BRANCH. The June meeting of the Bell Block branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held at “Manutahi, the residence of Mrs. Albert Rowe, when Mrs. French presided over a very goos attendance of members, visitors from Huirangi branch also being present. The meeting took the form of a pound afternoon, and as the result, 191 b of various and jams were handed to the district inurse for distribution among necessitous cases. It was unanimously decided that members contribute in the same manner at other meetings. held, during the winter months. Competitions ( were won by Mrs. J. Poletti and Miss French, and afternoon tea was served by the hostesses for the meeting, Mesdames Rowe and Montgomerie. A special meeting of the branch will be held on Monday afternoon, _ when Mrs. C. C. Jackson (Dominion president) will be present to address members.

HAWERA MEMBER fAREWELLED.

The usual social afternoon of the W.D.F.U. was held at the Carlton, Hawera, on Thursday. Musical items were <nven by Mrs. and Miss Seed (duet), Mrs. Moss (mouth-organ), Mrs. Brewer (song) and Mrs. Tocker (recitations). Opportunity was taken to farewell Mrs. H. D. Macdonald, who leaves shortly to take up residence in North Taranaki. Mrs. Carter said she regretted the departure of Mrs. Macdonald as she had always been a hard worker in the interests cf the division. Meuli, Rae, Vickridge, Tosland, Moss, Seed; Death, Mills, Thrush, Kendall, Allan, Jennings, MeKnowles, Smythe, Jones, MeDonald, Brewer, Owens, Graham, Roberts and Marsh, and Misses Washer, Seed and McPhillips. HAWERA BRANCH GATHERING. Mr. and Mrs. E. K. Cameron entertained members of the Hawera W.D.F.U. at their home on the South Road on Thursday evening. Musical items .were given by Mr. and Mrs. Allright and Mrs. Kendall, and Mrs. Tocker gave humorous recitations. Competitions were won by Messrs Vickridge and Allright, Mrs. Marsh and Miss J. Gallie.
