JUBILEE BALL

HAWERA FIRE BRIGADE.

About 300 attended at the winter show hall on Wednesday evening at the Hawera, Fire Brigade jubilee ball. The decorations were lavish. Seen through a wide aisle of greenery the illuminated word “Jubilee” in the brigade’s colours, blue and scarlet, shone down from its bower of ferns on the dance hall balcony, while the stairs leading to the Lloyd George Hall were bushy archways of ever-greens, interlaced with bright red streamers. The decorations in the upper hall gave an extra pleasure to dancing, so fine was the setting of bright-berried holly festoons and beautiful fern fronds, interlaced with the striking reds and restful blues of streamers, and the brilliance of hundreds of winking small lights artistically arranged and framing the six championship shields held by the brigade. The uniformed men carried their colours and medals proudly and well. This was particularly noticeable during the spectacular grand march, which was led by Superintendent A. Morrison and his daughter, Miss Mary Morrison. The supper roonj was entered through an avenue of cabbage palms, where clusters of scarlet-berried holly were linked round the white walls with red streamers and fern fronds, and the four long supper tables laden with delicacies were an artistic triumph with their tall vases of flowers and berries in warm autumn tints, also linked with streamers, on a blue centre ground, with intermittent bunches of seasonable berries and brilliant hued fruits. The official table’s centre was crowned, with a tremendous jubilee trifle. Misses Buchanan, E. C-aplen, I. Baker and Mrs. Jack Hobbs were responsible for the table decorations, while various brigade members under Foreman T. Dowdle and Fireman L. Warner are to be credited with the general transformation of the building. Fireman l-’eaeock and Mr. George Wills designed and arranged the lighting effects.
