The best crops yet judged in the South Taranaki Boys’ and Girls’ Glut) competition were seen yesterday at Whakamara by the judges, Messrs, li. Syme and C. H. Haynes. Leu Gulliver, with a plot yielding 112 tons of mangolds to the acre, leads in this section while his brother, Douglas, with a yield of 75 tons of carrots to the acre, leads in that section. A third member of the family, Jack Gulliver, grew a crop yielding 69 tons of carrots to the acre, though it was detrimentally affected by the proximity of a boxthorn hedge. The plots were in perfect order and secured tho maximum points for cultivation. Details are: —

WORK IN SOUTH TARANAKI AREA

The monthly meeting of the South Taranaki Power Board was held last night, Mr. J. B. Murdoch presiding. Also present were Messrs. L. A. Bone, E. A. Pacey, N. C. Innes, F. Parsons, A. J. Gibbs, E. A. Washer, E. Long, J. W. Snowden, D. J. Hughes and W. Rothery. The engineer reported that 67,280 units had been generated in June and 215,800 purchased from tho Public Works Department. The maximum demand was 996 k.w. In June, 1931, 238,100 units were generated and tho maximum demand was 810 k.w. On May 30 a rat caused a short circuit.

On the Noonan and Meremere roads 45 chains of 11,000 volt, 30 chains of 400 volt and 28 chains of single phase line .were completed and three 10 k.v.a. transformers placed in service. Eighteen service lines were erected. The old 5500 volt line in Surrey Street and Camberwell Roark to Eginont Street had been dismantled."'..

Seventy-four permits for installations were issued, five, for new installations, nine temporary workand 60 for alterations and additions. The load summary showed the addition of 95 lighting points, 40 heating points, three ranges, six water-heaters and three field pumps. ORCHESTRAL CONCERT. Sixty performers will participate in the Hawera Orchestral Society’s rirsv concert of the season to be held on Wednesday, June 29. As well as fine orchestral numbers the programme will include solo items. Miss Iris Lawson will play as a ’cello solo “Thais” (Massenet) witn a full orchestral accompaniment. In audition to these items the society has engaged the services of Miss Gladys Gamman, a very fine elocutionist, who has recently arrived from London. Miss Gamman's items will be a dramatic prose story, “The Vow,” from Sir Gilbert Parker's “Adventures of the North” and the humorous quarrel scene from “School for Scandal” (Sheridan). Another artist of note who has been engaged is Mr. Ernest Short, the popular baritone of Wellington. According io custom Miss Jessie Henson (mezzosoprano), a pupil of Mr. Harold Ackroyd, will be the local singer to be introduced to patrons at this concert. Special concessions wiil be given to students of instrumental music and elocution. Downstairs tickets for adults will also be reduced to meet the times. The box plan will be at Miss Blake’s.
