ENTERTAINMENTS

EVERYBODY’S TO-DAY.

MATINEE AT 2 PAI.

"Young Donovan’s Kid,” R.K.O. action special starring Richard Dix, Jackie Cooper (of “Skippy” fame) and Marion Schilling, will commence a season of three matinees and three nights at Everybody’s Theatre to-day at 2 and 7.45 p.m. “Young Donovan’s Kid” steps out of the pages of Rex Beach’s fiery novel, “Big Brother.” It has to do with an East Side gangster of the pre-war period, who, because he is given a seven-year-old waif to foster, decided he will go straight and give up the bad life. He gets a job in a steel mill, but the children’s court takes his waif-charge away. He becomes implicated in crime again and the story goes into a whirlwind of action, shot through the dramatic events that keeps one gripping his seat. The accompanying attractions will include Pathe News, “Toby in Aces Up” (cartoon), “The Magnate” (comedy).

THE REGENT TO-DAY. “BUFFALO BILL” MATINEE 2 P.AI. Walter Huston, recognised as one of the most accomplished actors on the screen, contributes another virile characterisation in Universal’s swift-moving drama, “A House Divided,” which comes to the Regent Theatre to-day at 2 and 7.45 p.m. In this picture Huston is seen as a brutal, tyrannical fisherman of the North Pacific coast, fighting against the pounding sea and his peace-loving neighhours with abandon, and. iinally brought to the height of emotional rage when, he discovers that his new mailorder bride has fallen in love with his own son. The fact that the son ieciprocates the affection of the young girl aids in bringing about a situation which is filled with dramatic intensity. Helen Chandler and Kent Douglass are featured with Huston in ‘A House Divided.” The supports will include Universal News, ‘Monkey Shines (Daphne Pollard comedy) and “The Clown” (Oswald Cartoon). An additional attraction at the matinee only will be “Captured by Redskins.” chapter one of the exciting serial, “Battling With Buffalo Bill.” OPERA HOUSE TO-DAY. “MERELY MARYANN” MATINEE. Whatever the reason, Janet Gaynor has the happy faculty of becoming more charming and more effective in every picture she makes. Her Id-test vehicle, “Merely Mary Ann,” which plays a return season at the Opera House to-day at 2 and 8 p.m., is no exception to this rule As the little drudge who blossoms out into an heiress she gives a genuinely remarkable performance and one that contrasts vividly with that of her famous co-s ar, Charles Farrell, as the sarcastic and bitter composer who Darns, almost too late, what love is. “ATerelv Alary Ann” is a perfect vehicle for the two stars, and is perfectly played' Director Henry King daringly went beyond the usual field to choose the supporting players, which include the evercUlDhtful Beryl Mercer, J. Al. Kerrigan a n>r Arnold Lucy, among others. The Authentic London settings and the sympathetic treatment given “Merely Mary Ann,” which is based on Israel Zang--1 Will’s p!ay of that name, make the reliultincr film a sheer delight. The supports include Fox News, “Land of the Nile” (travelogue) and “Gland Parade” ’(comedy).
