WORK OF THE COMMITTEES.

PARKS AND STREETS IMPROVED. The monthly meeting of the Eltham Borough Council was held last night, when the reports on the month’s work were received and adopted. The overseer reported that grading and water-tabling were done on Manguwhero Road, Castle Street and King Edward Street and the northern portion of Mountain. Road. The subsiding whicn occurred at the filling over the culvert in Castle Street was raised and coatea with tarred metal. Tar patching was done on Mills, Bedford, Kegworth, Railway and Bridge streets and Conway Road. Metal patching was done on Conway Road east and a portion of Cornwall Street.

Cleaning and tar-patching of footpaths was done on Bridge Street and Stauners Street. Chipping and grading clay paths was attended to in Mills, Burke, Graham, Bedford and King Edward streets. Metai screenings were being spread on the paths as soon as they were cleaned. ■The number of men being found work under the unemployment schemes was increasing, and the allocations for payment being far below the required amount, a reduction was made in the men’s time accordingly.

The caretaker reported on work in the parks and reserves. The trafiic inspector reported that 91 driving licenses were issued during the month. One permit was issued for the building of a house. Seven head of stock were impounded. The health inspector stated that no notifiable infectious disease cases were reported during May. The reserves committee reported that prices were being obtained for the construction of a bathroom in the grandstand building at Taumata Park. The committee would meet at Taumata Park to consider the question of a groin to protect the park property. It had been found that the trees offered by the Forestry Department were suitable and the original order of 5000 plants would be placed.

The works committee recommendec that a charge of 6d per day be made for gum-boots used on jobs for individuals. The works committee reported that arrangements had been made to surfaceseal Graves Street in the borough. The gasworks committee reported that the matter of street lighting by gas would be dealt with by a special meeting of the committee.

MR. AND MRS. SMITH LEAVING.

A representative gathering took place at York Road on Tuesday when a surprise party visited Mr. and Mrs. Smith and family, who are leaving the district. The first part of evening was spent pleasantly with card playin", the prizes going to Mrs. Smith and Mr. J. Nustroski.

After supper Mr. P. Paul, who made the presentation on behalf of the subscribers, said it gave him great pleasure to be the medium at whose hands Mr. and Mrs. Smith and family were to receive a. token of esteem and goodwill from their friends on the eve of their leaving for the Kaimata district, after eight years’ residence at York Road. They had always been courteous and obliging. He asked Mrs. Smith to accept a dinner set, which was given with great heartiness by their friends in appreciation of the many excellent services and kindness rendered.

The whole company was hospitably entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Smith, an excellent supper being served by a band of efficient workers. The proceedings closed with votes of thanks and the singing of “For they are jolly good fellows.”
