BOWLING YEAR REVIEWED

ACTIVITIES AT WEST END

WINTER PLAY ALREADY BEGUN.

PREPARING FOR NEXT SEASON.

The annual meeting of the West End Bowling Club was held at New Plymouth last night. Mr. G. Taylor presided over an attendance of about 30 members.

The year had been satisfactory from playing and financial points of view, stated the annual report. The season beg, ,n with a credit of £l5B 16s 3d. At the end of the - season the credit balance was £122 7s with no outstanding liabilities, after provision had been made for a new shed and a new mower at a cost of £93 Bs. That splendid result had been largely due to the work of the honorary secretary (Mr. F. J. Hill). The club had been fortunate in the way members had given their services in assisting the working of the club, and while that fine spirit of comradeship and co-operation existed there need be no apprehension of unsuccessful results.

Continuing the policy from last year, the club had deposited part of the club’s funds in the bank, this sum earning £4 7s as interest. Tie euchre parties run by the club during the winter had not been a financial success.

The reduced membership reflected the state of . the times to a certain extent, but the club had gained a few new members.

-From a playing point of view the club had well maintained its status, members taking part freely in various tournaments with varying success. A rink skipped by Mr. Lobb was the runnerup in the Cambridge tournament and Mr. Lobb had skipped the rink that won the Taranaki open tournament. The club had won the Taranaki shield after , playing the final with Eltham. The • inauguration of one-day tournaments by the club had been popular and the club hoped they would be continued.

The greens had been maintained in good condition throughout the year and had been favourably spoken of by the green warden (Mr. Hill). Winter play was. already in full swing, 38 members having joined for the season, about the same number as last year. Thanks were accorded to the officers of the club and. particularly to the ladies who had given valuable help during the season.

BANK BALANCE OF £122. The balance-sheet showed receipts for the year amounting to £386, the chief items being subscriptions £179, locker rent £8 15s 3d, rolling fees £5 8s 9d, entry fees for New Year tournament £6, entry fees for open tournament £l5, winter subscriptions £24, entry fees oneday tournament £l6, Taranaki Centre tournament expenses £B, teas £67. 18s Bd, tobacco and cigarettes £43 14s 2d. A bank ■ balance of £l5B 16s 3d was carried forward from 1930-31, making the total receipts, £545 8s sd. Expenditure during the year amounted to £423 Is 3d. The chief items were caretaker £172 17s, Taranaki Bowling Centre’entries. £2l, water rates £l2 17s lid, groceries £l6 06 4d, tobacco and cigarettes £3B Ils 2d, new mower £2O, new shed £73, maintenance, soil and paint £7 19s, manure and seed £7 18s 9d, telephone £7 10s. The club carried forward a bank balance of £122 7s. The balance of assets over liabilities was shown as £578 4s 6d. ”

Officers for the ensuing year were appointed as follow: President, Mr. M. Marsh; vice-presidents, Messrs. T. Tomlins and J. Christoffel; secretary and treasurer, Mr. F. J. Hill; auditor, Mr. A. E. Watkins; greenwarden, Mr. F. J. Hill; selectors, Messrs. T. Sheehy and T. Tomlins; mid-week selectors, Messrs. Tomlins and Marsh; match committee, Messrs. T. Petty and J. Lobb; delegates to the centre, Messrs. T. Petty and J. Lobb; executive, Messrs. P. Griffith, J. Duffin, T. Sheehy, E. Billing, E. T. Petty, P. Mason and W. L. Luscombe.

The club decided to discontinue the winter card parties. Subscriptions for the year were fixed at £2 15s, reducible to £2 5s if paid on or before December 31. The club decided to hold senior and junior competitions under the same conditions as in last season.

The proposed alterations to the rules of the Bowling Centre were left with the club’s delegates to vote on as they thought fit. The centre delegates were instrubted do vote for two games of 25 heads a day at the open tournament, instead of three. As the secretary declined an honorarium Mr. Turnbull said the club could not allow Mr. Hill to do the work he did without some acknowledgement. He paid a tribute to the secretary’s work and moved that the president and Messrs. Petty and Lobb should be appointed a committee to go into the matter of making some recognition to Mr. Hill oh opening day. The motion was carried.

The club appointed Messrs. W. Oliver, J. Lye, T. Sole and G. Corney life members of the club. The four ha<i been among the foundation members of the club.

THE FITZROY CLUB SUCCESSFUL YEAR’S WORK. CLUB'S SOUND FINANCES. The annual meeting of the Fitzroy Bowling Club Was held last night, when Mr. W. P. Okey presided over an attendance of about 20. The chairman in his report stated, inter alia, that he congratulated the club upon the measure of success, both socially and financially, which had been attained throughout a difficult period. The most prominent feature of the year’s activities was the improvement made to the club’s property. To complete approximately £2OO worth of improvements at a cost to the club of about £lB would in most cases call for some explanation by the treasurer, blit in this instance no explanation was necessary because it was generally known that liberal cash donations by at least two of the members and voluntary labour from others had made this accomplishment possible. Apart from being a source of pleasure and pride, the erection of the new concrete wall and entrance on the Mangorei Road frontage and the formation of a shrubbery at the northern end of the green enhanced the appearance and value of the property and appreciated the value of the surrounding properties. The principal donor, while desiring that his name be not disclosed, was well known, and the generous donation he had made on this occasion was a further manifestation of his generosity to the club, during his long period of membership. The other members who gave their time and energy to carry these splendid improvements into effect were men who are always in the front rank when there was work to be done.

The treasurer, ably supported ' by. th® secretary, had been able to present . a favourable balance-sheet. It indicated very careful handling of the club’s finances and the club was fortunate in having such capable officers as Messrs. Drury and Dingle.

Several members who had. made advances to the building loan offered to allow amounts to remain unpaid for this year, but as this amounted to carrying the debt forward into next year the committee could not recommend acceptance of the offer. Thus the’ only course open was to reduce the working hours of the caretaker. This was decided upon with a great deal of reluc- : < tance. ’ •

At the close of last year cash in banks amounted to £154 Ils. lid., and at the end of this year to £92 Ils. 2d. The club’s general financial position, however, showed a substantial improvement over last year, for where last year the balance of assets over liabilities stood at £1676 14s. Id., this year it stood at £lB2l 45., after having allowed reasonable depreciation on buildings and plant and with taking the improvements carried out this year into the balance-sheet at actual cost of materials and hired labour.

The membership roll at the close of last year comprised two life members, 80 full playing members and honorary members. At the close of this year the figures were two life members,* 70 full playing and honorary members. . The chairman offered congratulations to the secretary, Mr. E. Dingle, upon his re-election to a seat upon the council of the Dominion Bowling Association. The following officers were elected: President, Mr.- W. P. Okey; vice-presi-dents, Messrs, H. J. Price and J. T. Pavitt; committee, Messrs. G. W. Palmer, A. P. Brooker, G. A. LyaJl, W. Lovell, A. L. Hammond, R. Day, H. T. Hall and N. Murray; hon. secretary, Mr. E. Dingle; hon. treasurer, Mr. H. T. Drury; stewards, Messrs. T. Williams, S. J. Smith and W. Lovell; recorder, Mr. R. Day; auditor, Mr. J. T. Pavitt; green warden, Mr. E. Dingle; assistant, Mr. W. Harris; selector for club matches, Mr. H. J. Price; selectors for practice games, Messrs. W. West and J. H. Verry; club coaches, Messrs. H. J. Price. S. J. Smith and P. Jury. It was decided that the summer season would be from October 1 until April 30, or at the discretion of the green warden. The times for starting were fixed as for the previous season. The subscription for the summer season was fixed at £3 after an amendment for a reduction had been lost. The winter subscription was again fixed at £1 ss. Messrs. Dingle and Okey were appointed delegates to the Taranaki Bowling Centre.

The remuneration for tlie secretary and treasurer was fixed at the same figures as last year. It was decided that for all one-day tournaments all members should put their names on the board and the club selectors include all names in the rinks.

It was decided that the Taranaki Centre’s attention be drawn to the fact that the shield games in the Northern Division were finished last season before Christmas,, which was unsatisfactory. It was trusted that in the Interests of the game different arrangements would be made for the forthcoming season. j * A.
