PASSENGER SERVICE CARS

LICENSEES’ OBLIGATIONS.

CASE BEFORE AUTHORITY.

Hamilton, June 15.

A case of interest to licensees of passenger services was heard before the No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority in Hamilton to-day, when F. Slinger was called upon to show why, in view of certain alleged breaches of the regulations, his license to conduct a passenger service between Hamilton and Pirongia should not be revoked. A letter was read from the transport inspector, Mr. C. W. Thomas, stating that Slinger was making a practice of considerably overloading his ear. On two occasions he had been warned and the inspector asked that he should be made to provide better accommodation, as it was well known that overloading took place on practically every journey. •‘lt is not satisfactory to have three adults crowded in the front seat alongside the driver and people in the back sitting on top of one another,” continued the inspector. “A great deal of this practice is going on and I consider that in this case Slinger should be definitely instructed to get another vehicle to provide for the passengers offering on this route.”

Slinger admitted having overloaded his vehicle on one occasion during the Waikato Winter Show week, but denied that he had done so regularly. The inspector said it was not desirable that a license should be issued until the defects of the vehicle, particularly with regard to the brakes, steering wear, windscreen and lights, were remedied. After the board had conferred in committtee, the chairman, Mr. E. L. Walton, announced that further consideration would be given to the inspector’sreport in a month’s time. In the interval Slinger must provide a satisfactory vehicle for the service and must not overload, while, if the service warranted it, a reserve vehicle for peak loads should be obtained. Failure to comply with these requirements would warrant a revocation of the license.
