SHOOTING ACCIDENT IN BOAT
SIR MAUI POMARE’S SON KILLED.
DRAGGED SHOTGUN BY BARREL.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Foxton, Last Night.
A shooting accident resulting in the death of Te Taere Romaic, aged 26, eldest son of the late Sir Maui and Lady Pomare, Lower Hutt, occurred at the Devil’s Elbow four miles up the Manawatu River from Foxton this morning. Pomare was 26 years of age. He set out in a boat with a shotgun to pick up eel baskets. Later a Roxton resident collecting firewood discovered the body alongside the boat pulled into the bank.
Pomare evidently had been in the act of pulling the 'loaded shotgun from the bottom of the boat when the hammer of the right barrel caught and discharged the cartridge. The pellets entered his chest, throat and face and death was instant. Pomare was visiting relatives here.
