The hostesses at a. very enjoyable floral tea in the Victoria League rooms yesterday were Mesdames Ewart and Patrick. Musical items were given by Mrs. Shrimpton and Miss Ross (duet), Mrs. F. W. G. McLeod and Miss L. Knight (songs). Mrs. Shrimpton played the accompaniments. The competitions were won by Mrs. Collins and Mrs. G. White.

Mist Gloria Swanson, (the famous film actress, wife of Mr. Michael Farmer, gave birth to a daughter at her home in Farm Street, Mayfair, London, the pretty little Tudor-style cottage which she has from Viscountess Furness. The Daily Mail was informed that both mother and daughter w T ere progressing favourably. This is Miss Swanson’s second daughter. Her first, Gloria, by her second husband, Mr. Herbert Somborn, is now ten. She has also adopted a little boy, Joseph, Her first husband was Mr. Wallace Beery, the celebrated “he-man” of the films, and her third husband the Marquis de la Falaise, now the husband of Miss Con•tance Bennett. Her present and fourth husband, whom she announced that she had married “for keeps,” is a young Irish sportsman and landowner and is reputed to be a millionaire. They were •aid to have been married secretly, •ither in Paris or New York, and there was a, ceremony later at Yuma, Ari•ona. Miss Swanson is 33.

Miss Joan Laird, formerly of Auckland, who underwent a vocal training in London, will make an appearance in “The Rosary” when that picture is ■creened in Wellington. When in London, Miss Laird, who studied under Basil Malo, was successful in securing • place in the British Broadcasting Choir. This was an honour, as only 250 voices were selected under test from 6000 applicants. The test for sopranos on that occasion was the air “Rejoice Greatly,” from “The Messiah,” as well as a sight-reading test. No choristers are paid for their services; they ore only too glad to' secure a seat en the choir benches in Queen’s Hall. Miss Laird sang in the chorus of “Pilgrim’s Progress,” Granville Bantock’s new oratorio, and was also in a magnificent performance of Beethoven’s ninth (the choral) symphony, so beautiful that in places she found it difficult to restrain her tears. Miss Laird, who is now in Wellington, came back* to New Zealand for health reasons, but is keen to return once more to England.
