KIDNAPPED DOCTOR
LIBERATION BY POLICE. New York, June 1. Coincident with the Lindbergh case, Dr. James Parker was kidnapped and held for £2OOO ransom, but the police seized and arrested 11 of the gang and freed Dr. Parker unharmed. A jury found eight of them guilty and they were sentenced to from five to 25 years’ imprisonment.
The accused included James Betson who had been a city detective for 2c years. lie was a candidate for the Mayoralty and conspired with Josepl Pursifal, a former police magistrate, who Was the intermediary in the ransom negotiations. The latter confessed and
was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. It was one of those rare instances since kidnapping became a nation-wide menace in which the victim was confronted with his abductors and his story led to their conviction.
