MISCHIEF-MAKERS ACTIVE

CONFERENCE AT OTTAWA 1 ’■<CJ.li

ALLEGED WRECKING EFFORT

DIFFICULTY at LAUSANNE

BRITISH POLITICAL FEARS !> —ill..

By Telegraph—Press Assn.-Copyright. Rec. 9.45 p.m. London,. June 9. While, according to the Morning 1 os , fears are-growing in political circles that the Lausanne reparations conference will result in Continental entanglements which will prejudice the Ottawa conference, the Daily Express boldly alleges there is a world plot to wreck the Imperial conference.

The paper says mischief-makers are suggesting that the British are going to Ottawa to give nothing and ask everything. Others are trying, to create a breach between the Dominions, suggesting that each is out to profit at the expense of the other. The paper complains that even British politicians aie shaking their heads and saying nothing will come of the Ottawa conference.

CONFIDENCE AMONG CANADIANS.

( BENEFITS MUST BE MATERIAL.

Rec. 7.55 p.m. Ottawa, June S. Referring to the Imperial conference in July the Minister of Finance, Mr. E. N. Rhodes, told the Canadian Manufacturers’ Association: “We should have full faith that benefit can accrue to each component part and to the Empire as a whole. The measure of success will be the degree to which the discussions are approached from this point of view. There can be no advantage which is not mutual.”

“While the coming conference may not produce miracles, it will constitute an epoch in history, and the Canadian Manufacturers’ Association is doing everything in its power to contribute t 6 the success of the conference,” said the president, Mr. W. C. Coulter, in indicating the attitude of the association to the meeting of statesmen.

Referring to the diversity of interests at the conference Mr. Coulter said compromise and conciliation were familiar British traits of character, and solutions would be found to most of the problems. Mr. Coulter said he did not share the fear that Canada’s natural and proper desire to promote and safeguard her own productive departments might limit the accomplishments of the conjprence. “We do not share these misgivings,” he said, “because it is now generally accepted that each British country will promote its own development so far as that course is economic and practical.”

PLEA FOR MEAT AND WHEAT.

BRITISH BUSINESS ATTITUDE. Rec. 10.30 p.m. London, June 9. Presiding at the annual luncheon of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire, Viscount Elibank said he hoped the British Government would treat wheat and meat in a generous and practical manner at’the Ottawa conference, in which event he was sure great good would ensue. Sir John Gilmour, a member of the Cabinet, said that if the British peoples were finable to reach a common agreement there was little hope for the remainder of the world. He was personally hopeful for results, because the whole tone of the preliminary discussions so far as Britain was concerned were not for self-interest but for the benefit of the common weal. While Britain intended to give first consideration to the home market, a successful interchange of arrangements which would permit of the free entry of certain products was hoped for. The conference would not be helpful unless the countries which erected five-barred gates against imports removed at least the top rail in favour of Empire goods.
