JERSEY CATTLE BREEDERS

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION.

GATHERING AT WHANGAREI. The 30th annual general meeting of the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association was held at Whangarei on Wednesday, the president, Mr. C. G. C. Dermer, presiding. This was the first occasion the meeting had been held north of Auckland. Speeches of welcome were made by the Mayor of Whangarei, Mr. W. Jones, \the Mayor of Dargavillc, Mr. F. A. Jones, and the president of the Whangarei Jersey Club, Dr. G. Walker.

In replying, Mr. Dermer said it was admitted that some of the best Jerseys in New Zealand were in North Auckland, .and. the climate was peculiarly suitable to ' the Jersey breed. The annual report stated that, in common with other institutions, the association had felt the effects of the adverse conditions prevailing and there had been a slight decrease in membership, which now stood at 2020. The registration department continued to show an. increase. Once again the association had every , reason to. feel satisfied with the results of C.O.R. testing, for each year a steady record of improvement was maintained. Of outstanding interest this year were the remarkable performances recorded in the junior two-year-old class. The balance-sheet showed that. the finances' of the association were in a satisfactory condition

In speaking to the adoption of the report, Mr. Dermer congratulated the association on the year’s work, especially in view of the existing conditions throughous the Dominion. “I feel convinced we have cattle in this Dominion equal to any in the world,” he said. “If we pursue our methods of breeding and testing we will ultimately become a country where breeders from other parts of the world will seek our advice’ and stock. We are passing through very hard times, indeed,-but when'this great depression is’ over the farmer who lias kept up his testing and obtained certificates will have a very successful time?’ The report and balance-sheet were adopted. For vacancies on the council Messrs. R. J. Linn and G. H. Bell (Taranaki), and Mr. C. C. Dermer (Wellington) were returned unopposed. Mr. N. I. Neilsen was re-elected auditor.

A motion was carried providing that the members- of the - council shall be elected from members of the association residing in the separate districts of New Zealand, as follows: North Auckland, one member; South Auckland, two; Taranaki, one; Wellington and west coast, one; Hawke’s Bay and Wellington east coast, one; South Island, one.

It was decided that the council should donate suitable medals to class leaders in the 305 days’ test. ,
