WINTER SHOW

SUCCESS OF THIRD DAY

OPENING OF THE DOG SHOW

BIG ATTENDANCE AT HALL

HOLIDAY FOR CHILDREN

Children flocked to the Taranaki Agricultural Society’s winter show yesterday afternoon, when the schools were granted a half-holiday. The show was crowded during the afternoon, and evenin'T. * : billed with eager curiosity the children peered into every corner, saw the stalls, the agricultural displays and; the motor Olympia, played in the fascinating haunt of canvas town where they saw the wonders of the trapeze. artistes and rode in aeroplanes, skipped down the long halls to the tune of the broadcast radio music, listened to the (sweet, swift song'of the cage birds, and saw the judging of the friendly dogs. The dog show of the New Plymouth Kennel Club was opened. The splendid entry - of dogs was displayed - in (the basement of the buildings. There the tall-eared Alsatians stood erect looking out of their boxes, hulldogs whuffled, wire-haired terriers strained at'their collars as they reared on their hind legs and barked, cocker spaniels inclined a large and flopping ear, the Airedales- and collies ’muzzled'the passing hands in friendliness. ' AH kinds of. dogs from, little Sydney Silkies to great' sporting dogs were exhibited. The little dogs took a heated interest in the strange things about them, but the big dogs were nonchalant. Commening ou the show the judge, Mr. James Mason, Wellington, said that the quality‘of ,the dogs generally was well up to the average, and a number of individual dogs were well above the average..:- •

FINE • SPANIEL DOGS.' '

Cocker spaniels had formed a very ■ strong class. • The best of these was champion King Bowdler, a black dog of great type and presented in perfect bloom. The winning black cocker bitch, Austral Busy Body, was also a fine specimen ,of the breed. She ....■won in- hot competition against. Two excellent bitches in. Wendy of Eastwell (imported) and Judy Bowdler. Cockers other than black produced only bitches, the winning bitch, Daisy Bowdler, being very little inferior as a cocker to the winning black champion King Bowdler. A very fine; springer spaniel dog puppy,' Meinor Glen, was brbught forward., The judge considered it would lie a good one when? it reached maturity'. '• ,> Some first-class setters were shown,; the most successful being champion Rapanui Joan and 7 Rapanui Ranger (English) and Warwick (Irish). . The winning pointer was a dog of good type, thoroughly sound and , in. excellent condition. Two very creditable golden retrievers helped to add to the interest in the sporting dog classes. The Pomeranian and Sydney Silky classes were not outstanding, but two good Pekinese were shown in champion Bumble of Tang and Gleneagles Yo Su. The smooth coated fox terrier class drew a number of dogs- of more than average merit.. The winning dog was. champion Birchley Blizzard,, and the. winning bitch was Frankley Nobility. Airedales were not strong numerically, but-the winning dog, Rutherglen Bob, and the winning bitch, Duchess Royal, were -very creditable specimens of the breed. ■. The rough-coated collies generally speaking were of good quality. The principal winning dog was British ’Pride, and the best bitch was Scottish Maid. Though few in number, the bulldogs were not lacking in quality, the best of them being Prince Naughty Boy and Bonnie Flapper. ? ALSATIANS STRONGEST. Alsatians were stronger numerically than any other breed, and some choice specimens were shown, the winning dog, Heather Glen Thor of Glen Lodge, and , 'Danco of Picardy of Kilmartin, and .Claus of Marengo, * being three dogs of much, more than average merit who would have acquitted themselves with credit in any company. The winnin o, bitch, Meg of Marengo, was also an excellent specimen of the. breed, as. was the champion Rexdale Rene, Lady Briar of Glen Lodge -and Lady Patricia of Glen Lodge. There was- not, concluded Mr. Mason, a poor specimen of the breed among all the competitors. The best puppy in the show, which took the New Plymouth Kennel Club’s trophy, was A. Jaryis’ Lady Patricia of Glen Lodge, and the best of the opposite sex was Miss M. Jennins’ Meinor Glen, which won a special prize. . The best sporting or gun dog or bitch in the show, excluding terriers, was Mrs. P. _S. Lacey’s champion King Bowdler, which won the silver tea set presented by Mr. B. Tippins. The trophies for the best novice dog and the best puppy dog or bitch in this category were won by Mrs. R. J. Copestake’s Paritutu Belvedere and Miss M. Jennins’ Meinor Glen respectively.
