London, Juno 8.
In the .open golf championship first round Sarazen, with 70, leads MacDon-ald-Smith, Davies, C. Whitcombe, 75; W. Hartley, Padgham, Bradbeer, 76; Hodson, Mcßuvie, Mitchell, Dobson, 77; Dallemagne, 78; Vivamoto, 79; Twine, Duncan, 80; Michael Scott, 81; De Forest, 82. Rex Hartley has scratched. Sarazen was superb, creating a definite impression that he is playing well enough to win, as there was not tho slightest luck in his play. Moreover, on four occasions his putt lipped the hole. McDonald-Smith was very convincing. Armour, who is defending the title, felt the responsibility, and his score was hardly good enough. Cotton was not well, but covered his lapses by good putting, at which most of the British Were disappointingly poor.
STILL IN THE FIRING LINE.
BRITAIN NOT FAR BEHIND.
Rec. 10 p.m. London, June 9. I Though Sarazen has struck America’s first blow in the golf championship proper Britain is still in the firing line. The scoring was so close that the holder, Armour, will have much to do to make up the first round of 75. Alliss’ early round looked a certain leader. He began dazzlingly with 4 4 3 2 4 and was four under fours with the last four to play, but finished indifferently 5 4 5 5.
Mitchell was a great disappointment. Nobody played drives and shots through the green better, but he putted feebly. Armour was fidgetty and ill at ease. He lost confidence in his driver and used brassies at several tees.
