NEW ZEALAND CHEESE

OUTLET IN AUSTRALIA. INQUIRY INTO PROSPECTS. . A survey of the possibilities for New Zealand cheese in the Australian market, should the Ottawa Conference result in a lowering of the Australian tariff against tho New Zealand product, will bo undertaken by Mr. Walter Cavill, managing-director of Walter Cavill and Company, Limited, wholesale grocers, Sydney, who arrived at Auckland by the Mariposa on Tuesday. Mr. Gavill will visit the main centres throughout New Zealand and will return to Sydney by the Monterey on June 23. “Australia is at present doing good business with Canada as a result of the trade treaty,” said Mr. Cavill, “and we are hopeful that fuller reciprocity between Australia and New Zealand, as well as between other parts of the Empire, will result from the Ottawa Conference. We cannot do satisfactory business with New Zealand cheese producers under the present Australian tariff provisions, but if, as the result of the Ottawa discussions, some rearrangement of the tariff is made, there should be an outlet for New Zealand cheese in Australia. In view of that possibility, I am making a prior survey of the position.”

There were certain kinds of cheese which Australia could not produce. They could, however, be obtained from New Zealand, although the present Australian tariff prevented business being done. He thought that Australians could not object with justification against such commodities from New Zealand being placed on the Australian market. The sama thing applied to other lines of produce in which ho was interested and concerning which he intended to inquire while in New Zealand.

“Wo must have reciprocity within the Empire,” said Mr. Cavill. “The Aus-tralian-Canadian trade treaty is working excellently. We "find that Canadians are anxious to trade with Australia, and wo hope the same conditions will rule between Australia and New Zealand after the Ottawa Conference.’’
