.COMPLETION OF ROOT CROPS.

•BLEAK,DEY CUP MR. W. J. FREETH

The judging of the root, crops in the ■ Urenui district - was' finalised yesterday, when the Waitoitoi and- Pukearuhe districts were visited. The judging was carried out by Messrs J. F. Phillips (president) and D. L. Tate-(secretary) of the. Farmers’ Union- branch, who were accompanied by a number of interested members. -The district is noted for, the excellence of, its entries, and the standard,, whilst not up to last y?ar in swedes, was generally of a high order. ' . The Bleakley Cup for swedes was wop by Air. W. J. Freeth, who topped the list with 49 tons 19c.wt. The judges and party were entertained to refreshments; in the Pukearuhe hall, Mr. Phillips expressing.appreciation to Mesdames R. Luxton, V. Wells and C. Lambert for their hospitality. Mrs- W. J. Freeth entertained the party, to afternoon tea. Results are as follow:" • - Swedes. -.

One of. the series of fortnightly euchre parties was held in the Mimi schoolroom'on Monday evening, when there was a. record attendance. Mrs. R. G. Luxton won 10 games out of the I'2 played and carried off the ladies’ prize, and Mr. R. Allen with 10 games was successful among the men. The next series will decide the first' aggregate points ■prite, after which another points aggregate will be competed for. A very enjoyable dance followed the euchre. Mr. and Mrs. Allen supplied the music, and Mr. A. M. Zimmerman was master of ceremonies. Extras were played by Misses Chapman and Lambeth. The weekly cribbage tournament was held in the hall on Monday evening. Owing to the adverse weather conditions the attendance was not up to those at previous gatherings, but nevertheless competition was very keen. With the exception of the winning table honours were even on the remaining tables, each pair winning five games. Mrs. S. Chard, with seven games, won the ladies’ prize, and Mr. E. Rogers won the men’s prize with seven games after a playoff with Mr. S. Thomas.
