AXEMEN AT RAHOTU

ENJOYABLE DAY IN THE SUN

PLENTY OF EXHILARATINCt SPORT

L. SCHREIBER-WINS 14-INCH CHOP

' Conditions could not have been improved upon for the Rahotu Athletic Club’s annual sports' gathering yesterday. It was one of the ■ most enjoyable and successful-meetings-yet held by the club. Though late in the season the club’s enterprise in arranging the meeting was fully justified. Snugly ensconced in the old bowling green, which with its raised banks made an ideal location .for the chopping, the large, crowd basked in the sun and thoroughly enjoyed the fare provided. -■ _ • ’ There were very large’ entries, necessitating hs many as four heats in some of the events and making a total of 22 chopping and sawing events, apart from'other "competitions. ' The chopping was thrilling, finishes beiner remarkably close.’ The prizes were 5 well distributed. G. Harris, Toko, won the maiden, W. L. Smith, Warea, the local, A. Kapinga, Urepui, the 12in. handicap, W. H. West the Egmont 12in., and L. .Schreiber, .Waitui, the big 14in. chop. G. Haupapa, the champion, was placed second in the last-named event. F. Hill, Ratapiko,-won the single-hand-ed sawing in fine style and, partnered with AL Kuklinski, also won the doublehanded sawing. The .double-handed sawing produced the only protest, Harris Bros., the third men, protesting against- Magon and S. Tutu on the grounds that they had been entered and handicapped as Magon and mate. The protest committee, Messrs. J. T. Lineham,' T. , Willcox and H. Gil- • hooly T ..dismissed the protest on the grounds that it was usual for sawyers to enter in that manner, but the opinion was expressed that in’ future definite names of partners must accompany nominations. The timber used was an even line of pukatea. WRESTLING POPULAR. The wrestling was very popular,’ there being 12 entries in the. light-weight Cumberland style, which was won by F. Harris, Toko. His brother, G. Harris, won the - heavyweight, in which there were three entries. Mr. F. Julian ■was referee'. Harris Bros, subsequently gave an exhibition of catch-as-catch-can style, their evolutions being a. revelation to many who had not witnessed that spectacular sport previously. Another novelty to many were basketball matches between teams from Warea and Rahotu.

The children had a memorable day, Messrs. J. T. Lincham and V. Tyrell seeing to that. The gate takings totalled over £32, which is remarkably good in view ,of the fact that the price of admission had been reduced.

The officials responsible for the control of the gathering were: Handicapper, Mr. A. Hansen; time-keeper, Mr. J. Bennett; judges, Messrs. N. C. Morgan, G- E. Prosser, H. Gilhooly, L. Fisher (chopping), W. C. Green, Geo. Gibson, T. Farquhar, W. Waswo (field events), F. Julian (wrestling); starters, Messrs. H. F. Annis, W. Corbett (chopping), S. Willoughby (running); stewards, Messrs. L. Ward, L. Kapa, J. Hopkins, J. Fleming, B. P. Fleming, M. Fleming, J. McLeod, T. Waipawa, A. D. Gibson, E. Corrie (chopping), A. Gilhooly, R. Fleming (running), R. Fleming, A. Bettridge and W. •'H. Butler (field events); ground marshal, Mr. R. Indef; result steward;. Mr; T. Willcox; stepping the chain, Messrs. W. Hopkins and P. Chapman; gate marshal, Mr. J. Williamson. They and the committee, of which Mr. H. G.Clarke, is president, Mr. W.- M. Hill chairman,- G.-D. -Dawson secretary and A. Gibson assistant secretary; worked hard and deserved the success achieved'. The'ladies controlled 1 the afternoon tea and luncheon booth and, stall. Those responsible were Mesdames H..G. Clarke (supervisor).- W.' M; Hill. W. H. Butler, H. F. Annis, A. E. Williams, Weaver, Neilson, Farquhar, W. Waswo, Prosser, Brewer, C. Field, Ward, N. Morgan, R. Morgan, Barr, .Crockett, Lincham, Tyrell, Williamson and Misses W. Weaver and E. Clarke. Mr. T. Kirkwood, Stratford, was referee, and during the day he complimented the club on the excellence of its arrangements’ and gave some good advice to spectators and competitors. The Opunake Rand, under the baton

of Conductor. Henderson, played a bright programme. The results arc:—
