Thirty-seven horses took part in the .first meeting, and for a season or two there was no “tote.” In those days the horses were not driven in sulkies but were ridden as in the gallops, lhe total of stakes for the seven races was £l2O, the biv race being the Waimate Plains Handicap of 30 sovs. This was won by Mr C. Arden’s Little Harold, Mi. t. Gooch’s Young Victor being second and Mr. J. W. Johnston’s Vanity Fair third. Youihr Victor also won the - Burnbank Handicap of 25 sovs., Mr. L. H. Rayner s Straight Mat being second and Air. N. Mead’s Princess Eva third. The 1 ony Handicap, for which the stake was ±lO, was' also carried off by Little Harold, Mrs. J. Butcher’s Squib being second, and Mr; L. H. Rayner’s Silver Girl third. Princess Eva won tlie A'laiden,’ • xounjj Victor being second and Mr. J. W. Johnston’s- Tender third. The Ladies Bracelet went to Squib, Mrs. J. »». Johnston’s Miss. Humphries running third. Mr. G. F. Robinson’s Pylades won the Publicans’ Handicap, Tender and Silver Girl being second and third. Mr. R. McNeill’s Kaitpokonui was first in the Dairyman’s Handicap and Mr. W. Baker’s Melbington second. The early meetings were held under difficulties, and saddling paddocks, lawns and grandstand all had to be improvised for the race early in the mornina or the day before. The sixth meetin” was held at Hawera on June 22, 1911, Mr. W. O’Callaghan taking ovex the secretaryship. Among the members who took a piominent part during the first few years were Messrs. J. A.
