MANAIA ROAD WINS TUG-OF-WAR.

CARNIVAL PROCESSION TO-DAY.

The Manaia jubilee sporting activities , opened last night, when the heavy- t weight tug-of-war was pulled The final was won by the Manaia ( Road, team, which defeated Taranaki Maori. t W. McCook and L. Pepperell drew in j a lazy-stick contest. Pepperell replaced - J. Kerrick, whose arm had been injured j by boxthorn. McCook and Pepperell ; each won a pull and drew two. In a j 12-stone contest S. Revell beat Don ] Lound. i To-day there will be a carnival pro- ; cession from the town to the domain. < This will consist of old-fashioned and ( decorated vehicles, fancy costumes and , burlesques. It is timed to start at 12.30 ] p.m. and on arrival at the domain the Maori ovens will be opened. j At 1.30 p.m. a special display of hakas, pois and. old Maori customs will j be given. At 7 p.m. the final pulls of the tug- ; of-war will take place at the Town Hall. HAWERA LODGEvOF DRUIDS. INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS. The installation of officers of the Hawera Lodge of the U.A.O.D. took place on Monday evening, when A.D. Bro. Edwards presided over a large attendance .of members and officers and brothers of visiting lodges. D.P. Bro. N. G. Grant was installing officer. The brothers installed into office for the ensuing year were:— A. Bro. R. Tippett; V.A.D., Bro. S. Phillips; 1.G.; Bro. R. Hayward; 0.G.,'8r0 B. Martis; A.D. Bards, Bros. A. W. Ewington and J. Smith $ \.A.D. Bards, Bros. H. Hayward and E. J. Hurliman. The visitors were P.A.D. Bro. W. R. Kells, Acorn Lodge, Palmerston North (president of the Palmerston North Friendly Societies’ Council), P.D.P. Bro. Whitmill and officers and brothers of the' Stratford Lodge, P.D.P. Bro. H. Kasper and officers and brothers of the Eltham. Lodge and P.G.S. Bro. Ramsbottom and D.P. Bro. Hills of the Patea Lodge. The half-yearly balance-sheet, which was adopted, showed a very satisfactory position. As Patea Lodge is not now in the No. 5 district it was decided at a centerence of representatives of the four lodges that the Mackay Shield (of which Patea Lodge is the present holder) be returned to the D.P. of the No. 5 District and held by him until a further competition is held. At the close of the meeting a social was held during which items were given by Bro. D. McDonald, P.D.P.. Bro. W. Adams and P.A.D. Bro. W. Ramsay. The toast list was as follows: "The King and the Druids,” proposed by P.D.P. Bro. Whitmill and responded to by P.G.S. Bro. Ramsbottom and D.P. Bro. N. G. Grant; “Newly-installed Officers,” P.D.P. Bro. G. Braugh—A.D. Bro. Tippetts and V.A.D. Bro. Phillips; “The Visitors,” P.D.P. Bro. W. Adams— PAD. Bro. Kells (Palmerston North), A.D. Bro. Vincent (Eltham), P.D.P. Bro. Whitmill (Stratford), and D.P. Bro. Hills (Patea).

WAVERLEY SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Maverley school committee was held on Monday night, those present being Messrs. A. Boyne (chairman), W. Bowden (secretary), C. Christenson, W. Middlevich, W. Wicks, A. Elmslie and E. Aiken and Mr. Flaherty (headmaster). It was decided to hold a euchre tourney and dance on June 17 to raise funds for the dental clinic. Correspondence was received from ICohi and Nukumaru, intimating that they would _ probably join the Wayerley dental clinic shortly. A motion of sympathy was passed in connection with the death of Mr. W. Collins, the late chairman of the Wanganui Education Board. It was agreed to congratulate Mr. E. W., Hemingway on his re-election to the Education Board. Mr. Sanders, supervisor, and Mr. Elliot, inspector of the dental clinic, inspected the dental rooms and were gratified with the, equipment and things in general. It was decided to call for- tenders for the sale of the root crop from the school plots. . WAVERLEY NOTES. Mrs. and Miss Symes are on holiday in Ha wke’s Bay. Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Russell, Rapanui, who have been visiting. their daughter, Mrs. o'. J. Brown, returned home during the week-end. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. The Okaiawa Gaiety Club will hold, a hard-up ball in the hall on Tuesday,. June 21. “OH MRS. BLUGGINS!” COMEDY. • KAPONGA SOCIETY'S EFFORT. Playgoers who like good, clean comedy are in for a decided treat on June 15 and 16 when the Kaponga Amateur Theatrical Society will present its own original com-edy-drama entitled “Oh, Mrs. Bluggins!” The book, which has been written by two local enthusiasts, abounds with humorous and dramatic situations. There are two acts each with a dramatic climax. The first act comprises three scenes, all of which will hold interest from the rise of the curtain. The box plan is open at Mrs. Brewer’s, where patrons are advised to book early. A donation from the receipts is being made to the Kaponga branch of the Red Cross Society for its unemployment relief fund. OPERA HOUSE TALKIES. "24 HOURS” IN HAWERA. Showing finally at the Hawera Opera House to-night “24 Hours,” with Clive Brook as a dissolute society man who tries to forget his unhappiness in the arms of a woman whom he is later wrongfully accused of murdering, is a moving picture.
