NOTES ON TROTTING FORM

WHAT THAMES RACING REVEALED PUKEMIRO A- SOLID NOVICE.' ■ . . " ' ■ (Special to News.) . ' Some interesting form was disclosed at' the Thames .Trotting Club’s meeting last Saturday, and several of the houses promise to do well again at To Aroha and later fixtures in the Auckland province. ’ Pukerhiro was the outstanding novice performer. He • should never have been beaten in his first race, but was off the course nearly all the way. In his second essay he won well, and he will soon repeat the performance. Having his. first run in public, Guid Hairst gave an impressive exhibition. He did not handle the bends well, but displayed rare gameness in the run home. The awkwardly-named three-year-old— Scotch for good harvest—will score further successes., . . • A maiden to keepffin mind for a, future date, is Homebrew. This mare ran very green and her novice driver was greener, and a' little patience in her second start would have gained the mare second honours at a big price. Homebrew is made right and may be o.k. at Cambridge. Fisher had his initial race in this island' at Thames, and while he showed a disinclination to begin correctly, paced well on the journey. He should do better with more racing experience. ; Free Logan is about the speediest improver in the district, and the day he elects to leave the peg at the signal it will not be a race. The pony pacer has already lost four heats through standing on the mark, but he showed an improvement last Saturday and, pacing like a high-class horse, ran 3.27 4-5 into second pla'ce on . a track that was not fast.

Had she not struck trouble just after, the start of the novice trot, Mattie Herbilwyn would have finished first instead of third. On that effort she should collect next time out.

Win Huon is not a brilliant trotter, but his solidity will always get him some portion of the stake money in his present class. When speedier ones make errors Win Huori plods along and is a safe conveyance. Miss Braeside on track form is a splendid trotter, but in a race she is useless. Faulty at the start, the Canadian mare loses too much ground, but when she goes right some day.it will be “home, boys, home.” After many failures Myrtlene struck the right note last Saturday and never left the issue in doubt. Her Thames success should soon be followed by another . victory. Nathaniel is an honest pacer, and this factor keeps him in a place. One of these days he will go one better and score a long delayed win. Great Fame is still babyish, in his ways and runs about a lot in his races. The grey is an overgrown chap and with more age will make a really good horsfy Mr. Penalty’s cup run last Saturday was not in the same street as his New Plymouth and Wanganui form suggested, and off the front of the big race at Te Aroha there may be a different story to tell. . '

Our Peter twisted a shoe in the final stages of the Thames Cup, otherwise he would have paid one of the dividends. He will be further improved by the race and will take some beating at Te Aroha. Astral in saddle was a real gentleman compared with, the Astral seen in harness on the Taranaki circuit. He was ridden perfectly by C. King, and with the' weight on top may soon win again. Bingen Crest ran a creditable race in the Thames Cup, but if reserved for the ten furlong handicap ■ at Te Aroha the bonny mare would be very hard to head off.

Great Parrish was short of racing, but he made a useful showing. If he fails to get a place at Te Aroha his turn may come the following week at the Auckland meeting.
