THEATRE LEGISLATION
NEW ZEALAND’S "RIGHT IDEA.” . AUSTRALIAN JOURNAL’S VIEW. The, Film Weekly, a trade journal published! in Sydney, has something to on the recently-gazetted -regulations. affecting the building of additional picture theatres in New Zealand. . . Under the heading “New Zealand Has the Right Idea” the paper says: ‘‘lt is gratifying to learn from a cabled message to the Herald that with, th© ex? pressed intention of preventing uneconomic competition, regulations under til© Board of Trade Act have been gazetted in New Zealand empowering a limitation of the erection of new picture theatres in that country. Th© regulations authorise the appointment of officers to control th© issue of licenses to exhibitors in localities where the erection of additional theatres would be likely to result in economic waste. . ”
“Had such regulations been brought to bear years ago,” the article concludes, “on the motion picture situation in our cities and suburbs the position would be infinitely better than it is to-day.”
