TOWN BOARD AFFAIRS. The monthly meeting of the Kaponga Town Board was held on Tuesday, when Commissioner A. R. Bates presided. Others present were Commissioners W. G. Cran, J. P. Gibson, R. A. Law, W. Marr and H. J. Mills.

The annual analysis report on the town water supply by the health inspector (Mr. R. Gooding) showed a verysatisfactory condition of the water. The chairman stated that he had been approached with reference to a change in the library system, and after his explaining this to members and the hearing of expressions of their views it was thought that the present system was satisfactory. It was decided to leave the matter in abeyance. The electrical engineer reported that ■both plants ran without fault during the month, but a seriously depleted stream-flow due to the extremely dry weather curtailed the output. It was found necessary to cut the power off the D.C. system for. 24 nights in the month, and from the A.C. area for one night, due to the inability of the Taranaki Power Board to supply on that particular night owing to similar conditions. The period of cut-off was usually from midnight to 5 a.m. and during the worst periods it was found necessary to close the A.C. plant for an approximate total of 9J hours a day. A total of 42,360 units was generated in No. 2 power-house as compared with 43,300 last year, a decrease of 940 units, while a bulk power purchase of 14,930 units, plus 75 k.v.a., was made at a cost of £65 Ss, as compared with a cost of £G6 12s 6d for the same month last year. The number of units purchased exceeded last year’s figures by JO, so that the number of units sold shows a decrease of 930. It was proposed to repaint the exterior of No. 2 power-house at a cost of approximately £1 5s and the roof at an estimated cost of £1 10s. The foreman reported that metal was placed on the sides of Manaia and Eltham Roads where the sides were breaking away. The metal was rolled from the Eltham County Council with the assistance of the engineer's lorry. Attention was paid to the weir at the water intake in order to prevent floods undermining it. PERSONAL AND GENERAL. At the fortnightly meeting of, the Oddfellows’ Lodge M.G. Sister M. Evans presided over an attendance of 24 members. One new member was initiated. The elective secretary reported that the P.N.G'.’s degree for Bro. A. Gilbert, and the P.E.L.'s degree for Bro. E. W. Snowdon had been received from the district secretary in New Plymouth, but owing to the absence of the senior officers presentation of the degrees would be held over until next lodge night. Mr. R. Gwyn left on Wednesday morning on a visit to Wellington. Mr. E. L. Abbott, who has been competing in the golf championships at Rotorua, returned home on Thursday. Mr. J. R. Blake, who was for some time engaged in a motor service between Kaponga and Hawera, has settled at Russell, where he is managing a motor garage. Members of the Kaponga Bowling Club on Saturday played several games, officially closing the season, after which work of top-dressing etc. was carried on.

Another challenge for the “Tait” Stars was received by the Kaponga Ladies’ Croquet Club, this time from the Okaiawa Club. The match was played on the Kaponga greens on Tuesday, when the holders were successful in staving off the challenge, the scores being (challengers mentioned first): Mesdames Betts and Williams 21 v. Mesdames Brewer and Tattersail 24: Mrs. Hollis and Miss Washer 17 v. Mesdames Evans

and Tyack 26; totals, Okaiuwa 38, Kaponga 50. Early on Wednesday morning a thunderstorm of short duration passed over Kaponga. Heavy lightning was experienced. Rain also fell throughout the early morning. The fortnightly meeting of the Kaponga Fire Brigade was held on Tuesday evening, Superintendent A. Melville presiding.
