ALLEGED DESPOTISM
SHAH OF PERSIA CHARGED. Berlin, April 8. Four German journalists and a young Persian student, who made the Shah of Persia angry by writing articles describing him as an Oriental despot, were charged with lese majesty at Charlottenburg. . It is reported that when the Shah heard what had been written about him he said: “Let the pen be torn from the fingers of whoever writes against me, and let his tongue be cut out.” The prdceedings were taken as the result of representations by the Persian Government to Berlin.
In their defence accused cited cases of alleged brutality carried out by the Shah’s orders. They declared that the victims included a woman and a child, whose feet were branded with red hot irons, and two women who were publicly whipped in the main square of Teheran. The five accused were acquitted on technical grounds.
