CARRINGTON ROAD SCHOOL

WORK OF THE YEAR REVIEWED (From Our Own Correspondent). As there were only five nominations, the same committee was re-elected for the Carrington school at the annual meeting of householders on Monday night, namely, Messrs. V. Baird (chairman and secretary), P. Gilbert, H. Farmer, F. Salisbury and S. Lovegrove. The head-mistress reported that during 1931 the roll number was over 50 age attendance for the first term of the but had now dropped to 48. The average attendance for the first term of the new year was over 95 per cent. Of eight Form 11. pupils five gained proficiency and one competency in December. Very good work had been done in the lower room by Mrs. Mills. Great improvements had been made outside the school. The shelter-shed, partly blown over in a gale, had been re-con-structed. Over 200 young trees had been planted out in the plantation and over 1000 yearling trees had been lined out in the nursery.' New seedlings had also been grown. The school had gained third place in the competition for the Cuthbert Shield. In boys’ and girls’ club work Roy King’s calf had taken second place for condition in the championship judging at Waiwakaiho and also first place for dairy type in Group 2. At the winter show pupils had gained a number of awards. Thanks were due to Mrs. King for loads of manure and to Mr. H. Allen, who had shown much interest in the school sports and also the vegetable -jplots. The chairman reported that a great improvement in the appearance of the school and grounds was the new fence along the road frontage. Noxious weeds had been kept well under control and the grounds and surroundings are in better order than ever. The school picnic was held at Kawaroa Hark on February 24. There was a good attendance of parents and children and a thoroughly enjoyable day was spent. He congratulated the teachers, Miss Anthony and Mrs. Mills, on the yay ths school had been conducted, and thanked the members of the committee for their loyal support.
