FRANKLEY ROAD NOTES

The Rev. R. B. Gosnell, with a few of the members of his Fitzroy Bible Class, held a public meeting in the Upper Mangorei hall on Monday evening, when quite 50 people attended. Mr. Gosnell’s object was to start a Bible class among the young people in the neighbourhood, and after his address on the Bible class movement a class was formed. The following were elected a committee: Loader, Mr. Gosnell; deputyleaders, Mrs. F. Knauf and Miss Wells; secretary, Miss G. Pearce; treasurer, Mr. C. Radford; pianists, Misses D. Pearce and G. Wells;, flower steward, Miss Jackson. It was decided to hold the meetings fortnightly, at 7.30 p.m. on Mondays. Au accordion solo was very much appreciated, the player being Mr. L. Taylor, Fitzroy, and a few games before supper were much enjoyed by all.

As Miss Harkness, a teacher of FrankIcy school, has been transferred to Auroa, a farewell afternoon tea was given her in the Chequers tearooms yesterday. A large number gathered and a very enjoyable time was spent.' Miss Harkness’ parents and Mr. J. A. Valentino and Mr. H. Dempsey were present as guests of the school committee. Mr. Valentine and Mr. Dempsey paid tribute to Miss Harkness’ ability as a teacher, and she was presented with a toilet set. Mr. Harkness expressed his daughter’s thanks. An accident befell Mr. S. Blackman on Tuesday while ho was engaged at work on the New Plymouth wharf, a heavy weight falling on his foot. After receiving medical attention he was taken to his home in Franklcy Road. The Hurworth hall committee began the weekly euchre parties on Thursday night. There was a very good attendance and a very enjoyable social evening was spent. The prizes were annexed by Mrs. F. Baker 1 (pair of face towels), Mrs. Burkett 2 (silver sugar sifter spoon), Mr. L. AVisnewski 1 (pullover jersey), Mr. L. Gilbert 2 (box of handkerchiefs). Supper was served by ths ladies’ committee. It was decided to hold, the parties on Tuesdays. Miss Westrup, who has been teaching in the Frankley school for four and a half years, has been transferred to Carrington Road. Mrs. Barr, Christchurch, her daughter and her two sons, Messrs. David and AVilliam Barr, have been enjoying a motor tour of the North Island. AVhile at New Plymouth they stayed with Mr. and Mrs. J. Barr, Frankley Road. Miss Jean Bennoek, New Plymouth, spent a few days witli Miss AV. I’eppcril.

Miss Nola Gilbert, who has had a pleasant holiday at. Wanganui and Napier, has returned home.
