GALA AT NGAMOTU BEACH

OUTBOARDS AND MOTOR-CYCLES EXCITING SPORT PROVIDED. Outboard motor-boat racing and novelty motor-cycle events were attractions provided at a gala on Ngamotu beach on Saturday afternoon under the auspices of the Taranaki Outboard Motor-Boat Club and the North Taranaki Jfotor-Cycle Club. The weather was fine and there was a fair number of spectators. Owing to the “rocky ■water” two of the boats were damaged, but the racing was generally keen and exciting, nevertheless. An exhibition of aquaplaning proved popular. The Motor-Cycle Club conducted novelty and competitive events on the hard sand, the* broadsiding and jumping- the plank attracting special interest because of the risks that had to be taken 'by the competitors. The results of the outboard motorboat races were:— Harbour Board Handicap, four laps: Miss Moturoa (H. J. McKain, 25sec) 1, Miss Gwen (G. H. Couchman, 25sec) 2. Also started: Miss Pat (50sec) and Miss Rotokare (scr). Miss Rotokare (W. Stauners) upset in the first lap. • Fitzroy Handicap, four laps: Miss Pat (K. Gray, 50sec) 1, Jliss Gwen (ssec) 2, Miss Moturoa (scr) 3. Miss •Moturoa put in a wonderful •sprint over the last lap and there was an exciting race. Jliss Jlo'tuToa’s steering locked on the corner. Couchman’s boat (Miss Gwen) had a hole knocked in the bottom by bumpy water when nearing home. Miss Pat and Jliss Jloturoa did an extra lap by mistake. Taranaki Handicap. £lO and cup presented by Jlr. B. Frewin, six laps: Jliss Pat (60sec) I, Jliss Rotokare (40sec) 2, Jliss Jloturoa (scr) 3. On account of the sun blinding the competitors and their not being able to see the flag, two extra laps wCre run. Won by a length and 12 lengths. Farewell Handicap, four laps: Jliss Pat (35sec) 1, Jliss Rotokare (20sec) 2, Won by four lengths. Jliss Jloturoa (JlcKain) was early put out of the race owing to trouble with the steerin, gear. Jlotor-cycle results were: — Jumping the plank: J. Fenton (Norton) 1, J. Fitzpatrick (Nortpn) 2. Jumping the plank: J. Fitzpatrick (B.'S.A.) 36ft 1, N. Lightband (’B.S.A.) 30ft 2, H. Mackinder (Norton) 27ft 3. Relay race: N. Lightband (8.5. A. I, J. Fitzpatrick 2. Pulling the pegs: N. Lightband 1, J. Fenton and J. Fitzpatrick equal 2. The officials for the outboard motorraces were: Judge, Jlr. A. Williams; starter, Mr. R. Hawkins; handicapper, Mr. L. Loveridge.
