N.P. LEAGUE CYCLE RACES

EVENTS IN NEW PLYMOUTH VERY FAST TIMES RECORDED. A. RITCHIE AND ROY SOLE WIN. Under ideal conditions, four races were decided under the auspices of the New Plymouth League Cycle Club on Saturday. The races were quarter and half mile sprint races along Avenue Road, and were the second of a series of three afternoon races. Very fast times were recorded, but the road has a, decided down grade, which assisted the riders. The starter, starting the races.from the top end of Avenue Road, could plainly see the top of the High School (Hill. When the road was clear the races were started, and every event was run without any difficulty. Mr. R. Aroa, county inspector, and Mr. Gredig, Automobile Association representative, assisted the officials to keep the road clear. The club officials present were: — Judges, Messrs F. E. Orbell, G. Tippins and W. Yardley; timekeepers, Messrs R. Aroa and R. Yardley; starter and handicapper, Mr. L. E. Smith; road steward, Mr. G. Sole; marksmen, Messrs R. Solo and S. Rodgers; secretary, Mr. D. George. ■ Race details are as follow:— B GRADE.—Third of a series of six races for the club’s medal. Quartermile handicap. First heat: A. Reeve (40yds) 1, B. Berryman (syds) 2, L. Pelham (40yds) 3. Time, 31 3-ssec. Also competed: W. Jury (20yds) and D. Stafford (60 yds). Reeve, a new club member riding his first race, with good style won fairly easily by three lengtns, with Berryman a length ahead of Pelham. Jury and Stafford were close. Second heat: Gordon Parker (’2oyds) 1, C. Fox (10yds) 2, W. Martin (30yds) 2 (equal). Time, 32 2-ssec. Also competed: F. Toms (scr) and N. Knight !(50yds). Parker, a brother of the champion rider, was encouraged to ride his first race and without the proper riding togs won his heat easily by five yards. Final: A. Reeve (40yds) 1, G. Parker (20yds) 2, W. Martin (30yds) 3. Time, 31Jsec. Also competed: C. Fox (10yds) and B. Berryman ('syds). C. Fox finished fourth and as the winner was not a club member Fox took the third point. Reeve won by four- lengths, Parker was two lengths ahead of Martin, and Fox was half a length further 'back. B GRADE. —Half-mile. Fourth of a series of six races. First heat: B. Berryman (10yds) 1, L. Pelham (60yds) 2, W. Jury (40yds) 3. Time, Imin 5 3-ssec. Also competed: A. Reeve (60yds) and D. Stafford. (120 yds). Won by three lengths, two lengths between, second and third. Reeve was fourth and Stafford close up. 'Second heat: G. Parker (40yds) 1, W. Martin (50yds) 2, F. Toms (scr) 3. Time, Imin 3 l-'osec. Also competed: N. Knight (100yds) and C. Fox (15yds). Won by three lengths, a length between second and third.

Final: G. Parker (40yds) 1, W. Martin (50yds) 2, B. Berryman (10yds) 3. Time, Imin ssec. Also competed: F. Toms (scr) and L. Pelham (60yds). Parker eame from behind over th© last ■2OO yards and won by three-quarters of a length, Martin getting up to beat ■Berryman on th© post for second place. iThe officials took exception to the riding of the second and third boys and collusion was admitted. The officials had. no option but to disqualify the second and third boys and place Toms 'second and Pelham third. The boys concerned. did not at all realise the seriousness of the offence and frankly admitted their pre-arrangement. ■A GRADE. —Quarter-mile. Third of a

series of four races. A. C. Ritchie (Christchurch), scr .. 1 Roy Sole, 15yds 2 W. Lowe, 30yds .; 3 T. Hookham, 20yds 4

Time, 30 1-s'sec. Also competed: G. ■Tuffery 35yds, H. Eva 30yds. As Ritchie is not a club member Hookham takes third points. Ritchie came through his field at the half-way and won easily. ■Sole was two lengths ahead of Lowe. 'Sole finished cm * flat tyre.

A GRADE.— Half-mile. Fourth of a

series of six races. Roy Sole, 40yds . 1 T. Hookham, 50yds 2 W. Lowe, 60yds 3

Time, 'sBsee. Also. competed: H. Eva 60yds, and. A. Ritchie scr. Sole won easily with Hookham two lengths ahead of Lowe. Ritchie could not reach the leaders and eased over the last 50 yards to finish just at the back of the field.

The next races will be held on Saturday, two races for each grade, and these will conclude the series as well as the season’s aggregate. The events, probably of the same distance, will be held at Avenue Road.
