Th'e> practice attendances had been well maintained and the practices would be continued for the ’Anzac services'. The Main Highways Board forwarded authorities- for £7 5s and £25,. being £3 for £1 subsidy for patching portions of the main highways in the town. ’ .'Mrs;: C. • R.. Davies and Miss Eliott waited on the board asking for financial support for the Pluiiket Society. . They pointed out that the society undertook the cleaning of the' ladies’ rest room, and it was urged that at least the board could remit this cost. The chairman moved that the caretaker carry out the cleaning at a small additional cost. An amendment that the work be done by the caretaker without extra eost was carried. The treasurer reported that during the month rates amounting to £729 2s 3d had been collected. Hall hire, rents and licenses brought in £l4 16s, main highways subsidy £133 8s lid, and sundry £ll 9s 6d, a total of £BBB 18s Bd. The general account showed a debit of £462 17s 7d, the other accounts being in credit as follows; Manaia Domain £3B 7a lid, Waimate Domain £35 _l4s 4d, Manaia cemetery £2O 12s, municipal reserves £47 19s 3d. Accounts for payment amounted to £l2B 17s 4d. The sum of £24 6s'3d was expended on the cemetery under No. 5 scheme, and under the same scheme a refund of £2l 0s 9d on town board work was obtained. The revenue for March was a record for several years. An application for a subsidy was received from the library committee, but it was decided that the board was unable to make the usual contribution. A resident was granted a remission of half rates on a house property which had; been ' unoccupied for more than six months.

The chairman said he must hand on to the board the compliment paid to the clerk by the Government auditor, Mr. Marbrook, who considered that the board’s work had been exceptionally well done and the books had been brought fully up-to-date. The knowledge possessed by Mr. Rodie of local body law was also a creditable feature. Cr. Mead said he felt th® eulogies were well deserved.

AWATUNA EVENTS.

WOMENS DIVISION MEETING.

I Mrs. Bourke presided, over a large attendance of Awatuna Women’s Division 'members on Tuesday afternoon, when the annual meeting was held. The bal-ance-sheet showed a credit of £l2 10s 3d. The branch had sent £2 to the community chest fund and £2 had been Spent on necessitous cases. _ . The president did not seek re-election, but members wished her to carry on her good work, and Mrs. Bourke was unanimously re-elected. All other officers were also re-elected: Mrs. Hughes l(secretary), Mesdames Boyd, Coxhead and Gargan (vice-presidents). The president and secretary were appointed advisory members. A iraycloth, donated by Mrs. Coxhead, was won by Mrs. Duckett. ■ Afternoon tea was handed round, and Mrs. Boyd sen. (Hastings) delighted with three vocal solos. The Awatuna Anglicans combined with those of Te Kiri in a harvest festival service, which was largely attended. on Sunday evening. On the following night a sale of produce was held which realised a good sum. Mrs. Alty and Mrs. Munro and the four Thomas children, contributed vocal items which •were all heartily applauded. A dance followed, with music by Miss Collins. Miss Maud Hughes played “extras.” CROQUET AT WAVERLEY. Owing to the unsettled weather on Wednesday the croquet club’s closing dav at Waver ley was spoiled. Luncheon arranged for on the grounds, but by midday plav had to be abandoned on account of the rain. After a pleasant hour for lunch the trophies were presented. Mrs. Pepper’s trophy for the handicap singles was won by Miss Cleary. In the 20-minute competition Miss Cleary scored the highest and won that trophy also, Mrs. Cleary being the run-ner-up. Mrs. Muir presented the trophies.
