EGMONT COUNTY ELECTIONS

CONTEST IN EACH RIDING.

S MEMBER'S SEEK RE-ELECTION

The extraordinary election of nine Councillors of the Egmont County Council, which is necessitated owing to the re-arrangement of the ridings, is evoking keen interest, as is evidenced by the fact that there is to be a contest in each of the three ridings which replace the four under which the council election took place three years ago. Nominations closed with the returning officer, Mr. G. W. Rogers, at Opunake yesterday, when it was found that there were five candidates offering in the south and four each in the north and central ridings. As only three members are required to represent each riding an election will take place on April 27. Eight of the previous councillors are seeking re-election, the only member retiring being Mr. R. C. Watson, one of the three former Oeo riding representatives. The other two, Messrs E. A. Collins and J. S. Tosland, are contesting the South riding, as is also Mr. J. F. Shepherd, who was one of the three Opua Messrs S. R. Farquhar, Awatuna, who was a member' of the council some years ago, Mr. J. D. Conaglen, Pihama, are also seeking election. Messrs J. Young and E. G. Holmes, the two remaining representatives for the former Opua riding, and Mr. G. 'Gibson, one of the two members for the former Rahotu riding, are standing for the. central riding, in which Mr. J. S. Hickey is also contesting a seat. The county chairman, Mr. W. C. Green, the other representative of the Rahotu riding, and Mr. A. J. Lilley, who formerly represented the Newall riding, are two of the candidates for the new North riding. The other two candidates are Messrs T. Willcox, Rahotu, who sought election three years ago, and G. E. Goodwin, Puniho, chairman of the Opunake Power Board.
