SHEEP DOG TRIALS HELD

SUCCESSFUL GATHERING AT KOHL

COMPETITION AT HIGH STANDARD.

Despite inclement weather, particularly on-the first day, the sixteenth annual trials of the Waverley-Waitotara Sheep Doo' Trial Club were held at Kohi, Waverley, on Wednesday and yesterday. There was a, good standard of work throughout. Most of the arrangements were in the hands of the president, Mr. W. H. Watkins, and the secretary, Mr. H. W. James, and muph of the success of the gathering was due to their splendid work. Mr. W. V. Mclntyre, Inglewood, was judge. Catering arrangements were in the hands of Mrs. Middleditch. The entries in most' classes were well up to standard in quality and in numbers, though fewer than last year, and came from various parts of the Taranaki and Wanganui districts, The head, pull and hold in ring event, carrying the Mclntyre Cup, was won by R. Guthrie’s Lady Bettie. Mr. Guthrie will also hold the Wanganui Centre championship gold medal as Mr. T. L. Reilly, the actual winner, resides outside the district. At the conclusion of yesterday s events prizes were presented by the president. Details are: —

CLASS A: Novice event. About 300 yards. Head, pull and drive through two sets of hurdles. Points: Heading 10, pulling 10, drive 4, hurdle 4, drive 4, hurdle 4, peg 4, command 12; total 52. S. Judge’s comment: In the long pull events the work was good under the circumstances, the winning dog giving a very fine exhibition and showing that he would be capable of winning in any trials The placed dogs gave a good performance also, most of the best dogs on the West Coast competing, lhe sheep used were strong and provided a good test for the dogs.

Judge’s comment: This event was remarkable for the number of splendid dogs which failed to get going properly. It was difficult to say whether or not it was dub to the climatic conditions. The winner, Mr. T. L. Reilly’s Nigger, gave a splendid exhibition of handling ticklish sheep, while the other placed dogs were of quite a fair standard. OTAKEHO WOMEN’S DIVISION. The annual meeting of the Otakeho Women’s Division was held in the hall last Friday. Mrs. F. le Fleming preThe branch was formed in August and has a credit balance of £l3 18s. The euchre parties held during the year showed a profit of £l5. The branch has sent £7 to the community chest. A book club has been formed; parcels of books have been distributed to members by Mrs. Mitchell, group librarian. Red Cross lectures have started. The officers elected were: President, Mrs. le Fleming; secretary, Mrs. A. C. Walker; treasurer, Mrs. C. W. Nicholls; vice-presidents, Mrs. Rushin, Mrs. Putt ' and Mrs. Burke; advisory members, Mrs. C. IV. Nicholls and Mrs. Putt. Mesdames Davies and Mudford were added to the social committee. Mrs. Everett gave a demonstration on covering lamp-shades.

INTERESTING PATEA LECTURE.

The growth of Plunket work and the early difficulties confronting the new system of maternal and child welfare introduced by Dr. Truby King was graphically described by Dr. Helen Deem, Wanganui, at Patea on Tuesday. The success of Plunket ideals and the value of its products could be gauged from last year’s figures, when no less than 70 ton of kariol (emulsion) and 114 tons of Karolac (sugar of milk) were produced. Wtih the aid of charts, Dr. Deem illustrated the value of natural over artificial feeding and gave statistics showing the liability of the artificially fed child to sickness. Mrs. T. E. Roberts, who presided, thanked the speaker for her instructive address. OTAKEHO ENTERTAINMENTS. There was a large attendance at the second of the series of euchre parties held by the Otakeho Ladies’ Guild.. The prizes were won by Miss N. Julian. 1, Mrs. Dushin 2 (after playing-off with Miss Vera Rushin and Miss L. Putt); Mr. T. Horgan 1, Mr. McCrenoe 2. On Tuesday evening the prizes went to Miss B.
