WAIMATE WEST COUNTY

SKEET ROAD WIDENING.

LAST YEAR'S RATES COLLECTED.

The Waimate West County met yesterday, when Mr. H k C-ra T A Bridge, J. Leslie, b. -n. m Fleming, H. H. Buxton, J. 6. McKay and had been crushed on Skeet Road and the widening of over 50 chains was fin ished It was necessary to regrade abo t S Sains of this road. • Three feet was ■ tekS off one hill and the fillings at each ?de were raised three feet. The whole of this had been re-metalled and g ro^ e( J with bitumen. About 12 chains o Upper ' Winks Road had been surfaced with river , • , A amount of drainage 5 W with labour .* 'the No. 5 scheme. _ .. The tenders of Y. Sheenn for the Rowan. Road contract and of A. G. Bob crteon for the Upper Oeo Road contract recommended that Kokiri Road be re-faced and tar '° r ® and that the metalling be extended fo a further ten chains. It was decided to • have this carried out as soon as proc was received from the Comnr, nears that gross loads of 6$ tons vn two-axled motor-lorries would amply meet the requirements of your county, Tnd m the interests of economy a maximum classification of third-class would. ' be most suitable,” stated the letter. Cr. McKay considered that roads wi good foundations like the South Road would stand a lot of heavy traffic wi ..id and speed together that shook the foun Hh Believed If travelled slowly they could run all d y without doing any damage. After a short discussion it was dec * d to hold the matter over for the new council to deal with. . T>i„ n A deputation from the Manaia Pluket Society, Mrs. C. R. Davies and Miss smou, wiu » th. that it assist the society with a dona tion. It was pointed out tha * lo^^ cal in oher districts supported the local Seielies with grants. The bum of was required to maintain the Manaia Km neb and at the present time it was more difficult than usual to obtain public the «au« T : worthy one and it was agreed to make a Mourie considered the Plunket Society was more deserving than the library 7 It was considered that; some of ’ the other contributions would have to cut out and the money diverted to the P T n heCo S mm£2;ner of Unemployment ; wrote stating that local bodias would have first call on any surplus trees for j Sting, at present it was impossible to say whether there would be any available for farmers. , Tpnre . The chairman was appointed to i p gent the council at the conference regarding the Opaku reserve fund. 6 Mr D G. Sherson waited on the coun oil geeking financial support foir the jubilee celebrations in the event of a 10-s »id the council not guarantee anything from the funds, but te the event of a deficiency it might able to make a contribution. * was decided to support the jubilee committee’s request for a broadcast of the jubilee concert. . The chairman’s honorarium was fixed at the.same as last year. The chairman said that last meeting of the old council he wished to congratulate councillors op the good position of the county. This was due largely to the economy practised last year. Owing to the keen'work of the clerk much had been done to put the county in a good position. He had made every effort to collect all the rates. The management of the engineer also had been instrumental in putting the roads in good order at a minimum of expense. The rate had been reduced considerably and there was no need to fear going back to the old rate. It was possible to consider making'the rate this year slightly lower Iha-ii last, ysar. t The year started- with credit payees of £3075 in Waimate riding and ilbol in Kaupokonui riding, and after paying all expenses the year ended with the .respective credit balances increased to .£4128 and £2596. The reason for this was that the total European, rates for 1931-32 had been collected. This, no doubt, was brought about by the per cent, rebate, which proved a great inducement and relief. The total reduction of rates to the ratepayers amounted to 30 per cent. It was doubtful if the rebate' of 12$ per cent, would, again be received, and the relief from the Highways Board might bo curtailed, so it would be wise to guard against these possibilities. Cr. McKay mentioned that the hospital levy for repayment of capital was .postponed last year and it was hoped to have it postponed again this year. ' It was pointed out that the large credit balances were also due to some works being uncompleted at the end of the financial year. This would absorb gome of the money early this year. The work done during the year was: — Kaupokonui riding: Rowan Road,, refacing with crushed metal, 100 chains; Glenn Road, re-facing, 40 chains; Skeet Road, widening, about 80 chains; Skeet Road, re-surfaced with bitumen, 160 chains; Glenn Road, re-surfaced with bitumen, 100 chains; Upper Oeo Road, re-surfaced with bitumen, 220 chains. Waimate riding: Glenn Road, re-facing gnd grouting, 140 chains; Main South Road^widening (stone out and paid for), 600 yards; Main South Road, re-surfaced with bitumen, 160 chains; Normanby Road, re-surfaced with bitumen, 140 chains; Taikatu Road, re-surfaced with bitumen, 320 chains; Kearns Road, boulders out on road and paid for, 500 yards.
