INCREASING POPULARITY SHOWN. STRATFORD SOCIETY'S POSITION. An a result of the year’s working, which included the purchase of 60,000 trout ova. and the liberation of numerous pheasants reared by the society, the. Stratford 'Acclimatisation Society has emerged with the handsome profit of £43 4s. Sd., a position regarded by the committee at its meeting .on Tuesday evening as highly satisfactory. The statement of accounts allowed that the society held cash in hand and at the bank, totalling £74 9s. 10d., and in addition there was £196 14s. 3d. on deposit. The chief items of expenditure were £l3 6s. for the purchase of the trout ova, £32 ss. sd. for the purchase and liberation of pheasants, £2 10s. Bd. for food for the birds, £2 12s. 4d. commission on shooting licenses, rewards and costs of litigation £l3 45., and secretary’s honorarium £l2 12s. Receipts comprised shooting license fees £47, fishing license fees £7l 155.. opossum revenue £l6 16s. '2d., interest on deposit £lO ss. Id., fines £22. The secretary (Mr. G. A. Carter) explained that the’ year compared very favourably with the previous one, when the excess of expenditure over income amounted to £l3 2s. lid., so that a loss had been converted into a substantial profit, Mr. A. J. Davey remarked on the encouraging position, fishing and shooting licenses being numerous, while Mr. J. Petrie, who presided in the unavoidable absence of Mr. T. Richardson, stated that there had been a gradual increase in fees over the past ten years, pointing to the fact that the sport controlled by the society was becoming more and more popular. The statement of accounts was approved for submission to the council meeting on May 10. Mr. Davey reported that ho had liberated about 53 pheasants, making upwards of 100 birds liberated this’ year. There were still 24 birds on hand. All the birds were good and healthy. The secretary reported that both the Marine Department and the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society were unable to supply Loch Leven eyed ova. Application had been made to the North Canterbury Association for ova. The 'offers of Messrs. A. Gannaway and J. Wells, Tariki, to rear fry to the yearling stage for liberation in Lake Ratapiko were accepted. DOUGLAS CARD AND DANCE PARTY. ATD FOR VESTRY FUNDS. Despite unfavourable weather, a large crowd assembled at the Douglas hall on Tuesday evening, a number of visitors coming from Toko for the euchre party and dance in aid of the Anglican vestry fund. About 30 couples sat down to cards, and after very keenly-contest-ed games Miss Florence Rumball and Mr. L. Retch were the winners. Prizes for the hidden number, which were donated by Mrs. Needham, were won by Miss L. Brown and Mr. A. Reichardt. The euchre prizes were the gifts of Mrs. Brown, Miss Rumball and Mr. Rumball.

At the conclusion of the competition supper was served and the hall was then prepared for dancing, music for which was supplied by local talent. Interspersed with the dancing were songs by Mrs. A. Walter and Mr. J. Brown. These were greatly appreciated. Mrs. Walter was the accompanist©. Mr. and Mrs. Fetch donated prizes for a Monte Carlo waltz, which was won by Mr. B Wilmshurst and partner. Good business was done in home-made sweets, Misses Bumball and Walter taking the sum of 30s. As the result of the evening the vestry fund will benefit to the extent of over £7. ELTHAM CROQUET GAMES. SECOND DAY OF TOURNAMENT. The croquet tournament was continued at Eltham yesterday and will be concluded to-day. The intermediate handicap section yesterday was won by Mrs. Gu'bb. In the handicap singles, any bisques, Mrs. O’Hagan beat Mrs. Gower; Mrs. Cooper beat Mrs. McKay. In the handicap doubles, any bisques, Miss Thomas and Mrs. Thurston beat Mrs. Carman and Mrs. White. Play in the sections of the handicap singles resulted: Two and a half bisques and under: Miss Thomas beat Mrs. Carman. Five and a half bisques and over: I Mrs. Gower beat Mrs. Pennington. Any bisques: Mrs. Manley beat Mrs. Thurston; Mrs. Fountaine beat Mrs. Thomas. In the handicap doubles, four bisques, Mrs. Egarr and Mrs. Peacock beat Mrs. OHagan and Mrs. Gubb. ELTHAM FOOTBALL GAMES. CELTIC AND HIGH SCHOOL. At a meeting of the Eltham Football Club committee it was resolved to request permission from the Bugby Union to play Celtic at Eltham on Saturday. Messrs. T. Bennett and J. Rye were appointed gatekeepers and Air. J. Carlson referee. Air. Bennett was authorised to get everything necessary for marking out the ground. It was resolved to’write to Stratford Technical asking them to visit Eltham to play the thirds on Thursday, April 21, in return for last season’s game. Messrs. Bennett, Bourke and Whiting were appointed delegates to the junior executive. It was decided to support the Opunake remit regarding the distribution of gate money according to the proportionate mileage travelled. eltham red cross. PREPARATIONS FOR RELIEF. At a meeting of the Eltham Red Cross Society the secretary reported that the ladies had been busy each week sewing and making useful articles of clothing. The chairman said it was not intended to open the receiving depot until such a step was necessary. He stressed the im- 1 portance of having a central depot for ' receiving all relief clothing.
