WAKENED BY FIRE SIREN
MAN FINDS HOUSE ABLAZE PASSER-BY CALLS THE BRIGADE. FIREMEN SAVE STRATFORD HOME Awakened by the siren of the approaching fire engine to find his home blazing, Mr. T. S. Gedge, an elderly Stratford resident, had to make a hasty escape. He was not injured and his house was not destroyed. The flicker of the flames was noticed by Mr. W- Bailey as he passed the fiveroomed wooden cottage in Cordelia Street. Mr. Bailey aroused a nearby neighbour and the brigade was summoned by telephone. At practically the moment the engine arrived Mr. Gedge, a heavy sleeper, effected a hurried exit. The fire had not penetrated to any extent beyond the kitchen where it originated, and less than ten minutes with the hoses served to quell it. The cause of the fire was not ascertained last night. Mr. Gedge was alone in the house, his wife being at Christchurch and his daughter on holiday in the.country.
