BACHELOR TAX HINTED
LEVY ALSO ON SPINSTERS
MEASURE THOUGHT NOT UNLIKELY
INCOME TAXATION THE METHOD.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Wellington, Last Night. Although no decision has yet been reached on the point, it is regarded as not unlikely that the Government will decide to introduce this year a bachelor and spinster tax as part of its income tax proposals. It is stated on good authority that if it is decided to levy a bachelor and spinster tax it will be by way of income tax. The scheme would provide for a general lowering of the statutory exemption to ena'ble differentiation to be made in favour of all married taxpayers. By that means bachelors and spinsters would pay an additional impost.
