FROM TRACK AND STABLE

M. McCARTEN RIDING WELL OTAIRI WORKING AT AWAPUNL CROUPIER SHOULD SOON BE READY

(By

"Hurry On.”)

It was hoped after Richfield’s good showing in the Opunake Cup that the son of Acre was returned to his form of last autumn, but liis recent efforts on the track at Hawera have not been encouraging, and he will apparently have to imprrove a whole lot to win a race. R. Barlow has not asked anything serious of Sparkling Morn since her win at Opunake, but the Hunting Song filly is well and will probably make her next appearance at Hawera next month. Frrbm the easy manner in which she led the field home at Opunake it would seem that she would only have had to improve a little in the interval to earn some stake money among the hacks at the Egmont meeting. A Southland report states that a filly foal by Night Raid out of the well-known mare Set Sail possesses more bone and substance than has been seen at the same age in the district for many years. This quality, a marked feature of Phar Lap and Niglitmarch, indicates great possibilities for future development. Populace, the half sister by Chief Ruler to those good performers Civility and Siaosi, had been a disappointment until she smothered the field at the finish of the Novice Stakes at the Wairarapa meeting on Easter Monday. As she is not opposed by a very strong field in the Lansdowne Hack Handicap at Mas ter ton on Friday it would not be surprising to see her take a hand in the finish.

The lightweight horseman K. Voitre, who is riding in great form at present, is to have the mount on Jayson in the Cup at Masterton. Jayson has run some good races this season and the big track is likely to be in his favour.

Otairi is back on the track at Awapuni, and is being put through easy work by L. Knapp. The Raper Money gelding won £2675 in stakes last

season, and he should Be a good winner again during the winter, as he is good both on the flat and over the jumps. It is reported that the trouble over the ownership of the brilliant three-year-old Croupier has been settled out of Court. If this is so racegoers may expect to see his name among the nominations before long, as ,he has been in work at Ellerslie for some time past. As he demonstrated last winter that a soft track does not inconvenience him at all, he may be found playing his part in some of the big handicaps at Ellerslie in June.

The Sydney syndicate which races under the assumed name of “F. Smithden” had to go up to 900 guineas to secure the full brother to the crack two-year-old Kuvera at the recent yearling sales. Kuvera is by Bronze Eagle’s sire, Brazen, from Varta Mozzle, a mare by Linacre from Grafton Lass. The Trentham trainer H. Telford is busy with his rising two-year-olds, by Paper Money—Epitaph, and Paper Money—Ebba, both colts. The former is a brother to Endorse, and halfbrother to Tea Trader. They are reported to be nice movers. Telford usually has his youngsters well forward. He was really responsible for Tankard’s preparation last spring. ’ Last spring Tenacre won three hurdle races in good style, but after racing on the flat at Stratford and Foxton he was given a spell. He is again in active work at Hawera and on Tuesday morning gave a good exhibition oyer the schooling hurdles. However, he is on the small side and with the weight he is likely to get he will-probably require careful placing to pay his way. The Hawera trainer -J.- Fryer has been laid up -through, illness, but was back supervising the work of his team on Tuesday morning. Fryer has had a very successful season with Peter Jackson, Gaine Carrington, and Green Linnet, and is now preparing Copey, Airtight and Banbridge for the jumping events ahead.

Mr. W. Scholium, of Auckland, has decided to send White Wings, the six-year-old daughter of Limond and Waterwings, to Sydney. She will be trained at Randwick by Frank McGrath, whose charges in recent years have included Amounis and the Caulfield Cup winner Denis Boy. The Ellis family had a field day at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. A. E. Ellis rode the winners of the High Weight Handicap (Appeal), Gardiner Memorial Handicap (Rjamo) and Farewell Handicap' (Pakitere), 'while he was second on Pakitere in the Hack Handicap. L.J. Ellis won the Novice Stakes on Denise and the Flying Handicap on Gold Pit. With the exception of Ramo, who is trained by J. B. Pearson at Riccarton, all these horses are from the Washdyke stable of E. J. Ellis, a brother of the two successful jockeys. The Arausio-Merry Jest filly Merry Way is thriving on her spell on the grass and is developing into a fine type ’ of thoroughbred. If looks go for anything she should be a good sort to be able to produce among the hacks in the spring. Though he was unable to take part in the two St. Legers, Bronze Eagle must be regarded as the best three-year-old of the season. He defeated Peter Jackson decisively in both Derbies, and even allowing that the latter improved a lot during the interval, it can scarcely be said that he was the equal of the Brazen colt. Bronze Eagle is said to have made a good recovery from his trouble and is expected to be an improved horse next year. However, he will probably have to take his place in the handicap events, as no owner’s purse is likely to become fat with the present stakes offering for weight-for-age events.McCarten at His Best.

The main factor in the success of Chide in the Dangar Handicap at Randwick, says The Sporting Globe, was the great exhibition given by Maurice Me-* Carten, who had the mount on the Paladin gelding. Not an inch more ground than necessary was covered by Chide, and, though well back at one stage, he finished at great speed to @et up in the last stride and beat Tangible and Inducement.

Compared with his Sydney Cup performance, Saturday’s run was a remarkable reversal of form. Still, the muddling pace set by the leaders in the Easter Monday race militated against the prospects of real slayers’ and that is the reason that horses like Chide, Second Wind, Shadow King, and Strength were left standing when the race developed into a five-furlongs sprint. Chide came right round his field to win the Dangar Handicap, and, if he can maintain this good form, should win again at his first suburban appearance. Tangible’s close second confirmed his winning effort in the City Handicap. Evidently this old stayer is back to his very best trim, and his immediate suburban ■ prospects appear bright.

Reports Denied. The reports in circulation that the stewards of the Masterton Racing Club are not sanguine as to the financial result of this week’s meeting, and that it was recently stated at a meeting of the stewards that, in view of the depression, only a loss was to be expected, are given emphatic denial by the secretary to the club (Mr. N. H. James), says the Post. Mr. James states that there is not a particle of truth in either report, and he is at a loss to understand honf or where they originated. The club’s finances are in a better position now than they were at the corresponding period last year. Although the club, in common with all other clubs, is up against it, the prospects ahead of it are quite as good as those of most other’ country clubs, and better than many. Mr. James also states that the further reports that the club may not hold a meeting towards the end of the year, and that “many members are of opinion that it would be better to wind up the club than keep going with no hope of recovery,” are equally untrue. “There is not a vestige of truth in any of them,” he said. “The rumours are founded on the flimsiest imagination, and if they were allowed to remain they might do the club considerable harm, as in suggesting that it' is not in a position to *pay out stakes, which is absurd.” A final point stressed by Mr. James is the fact that the gold cup to be presented to the winner of the Masterton Gold Cup to-morrow has a standard worth of £125, but that, on the present value of gold, its worth is £152, according to information received from the indenting agents. Besides this trophy, which goes to the owner of the winner, there is a miniature cup for the trainer of the winner. TROTTING AT NELSON. DECLARATION OF HANDICAPS. Christchurch, April 12.
