A shortage of bread and the consequent baking of scones had tragic consequences ’ y a seaside party of five men at Maryborough, Queensland, on Sunday, March 6. Two died by the roadside, and the other three were rushed to hospital in a serious condition. The dead men were William Edward Bayley, invalid pensioner, . arid John Henry Bayley. The others in the party were Henry Walter George Bayley, George Grieves and Emil Wegner. , The five men travelled to Foster s Gamp, near Maroon, a seaside resort about 13 miles from Maryborough, for the week-end. On Sunday it was found that they were short of bread, and B eones were made. They also ate some fish. About 15 minutes after the meal they were suddenly taken ill, and, in two sulkies, hastened toward Maryborougln A passing motor-car was hailed, and the two men in the first sulky were hurried to the Marlborough Hospital in a serious condition. The ambulance hurried along to find the other men. It came to the party about seven miles from the town. Two of the men were lying dead by the roadside, and the condition of the third was serious. The symptoms suggest strychnine poisoning’
