SWIMMING SEASON CLOSES
s NOTES FROM THE SOUTH. HAWERA AGAIN TO THE 'FORE. The Hawera club again won the banner at the Taranaki championships but at the same time the season was not so successful as it might have been. The club ceased to go forward, and though it did not actually slip back either, some progress was to be expected. To be champion club of Taranaki is an honour which cannot be gained by resting on the laurels of past achievements. Last season two club nights a week were held, satisfactorily, but this year it was not such a successful feature. However, hopes may well be entertained, for something better next year. The club needed something to /Id its swimmers together, and this hr.s been found in polo. With, all sections^of the club taking a , keen interest in the ■ game much good should result. .The club had the honour of having two men who were probably the fastest in Taranaki over 50 and Jobson. As well there was A. Ryan, who swam very consistently over the longer distances. F. and. R. Clarke and J. Oliver were prominent among the younger swimmers, and Oliver’s presence should do much to raise the standard of swimming. The younger girls showed keenness but up till the time they were introduced to polo the ladies were rather apathetic. Even more than in the case of the men polo is likely to prove a blessing to the club in their case. In other parts of South Taranaki the sport made progress. Patea swimmers took' a more prominent part than they had previously and added to the interest of carnivals.
At Eltham a satisfactory move was the resurrection of the Eltham club. With some promising young swimiqers, including Ware, who should do well, the club has every reason to look to a successful future.
