MAUNDY PENCE TO BE GIVEN
SERVICE AT WESTMINSTER ABBEY KING REVIVING OLD CUSTOM. British Wireless. Rugby, March 22. The King and the Queen will attend the Royal Maundy service at Westminster Abbey on Thursday, when in accordance with the old custom Maundy pennies will be distributed. This will be the first occasion the reigning Sovereign has attended the service for a great number of years. 1 The Maundy office originally consisted of the washing of the feet of twelve poor old men by the King to commemorate the washing of the apostles’ feet. The last English King to carry out this duty was James 11. Since his day gifts of Maundy money have been distributed on behalf of the King to tho aged and infirm poor. As many men and as many women as there are years m the King’s age (67 this year) receive Maundy money. Each will be given 67 pence.
