ABOLITION OF WING-FORWARD

ELTHAM RUGBY CLUB’S OPINION. Delegates were instructed by the Eltham Football Club at its annual meeting to vote for the abolition of the wingforward and in favour of the 3—2—3 scrum formation. Considerable discussion took place on the scrum formation. Mr. A. Corkill said he would like to see the union go further and go in for a 3 —4 —I formation. At present the ball came out anywhere. Mr. F. H. Townsend said that playing 2—3—>2 New Zealand had done as well as any country. He did not see. why the formation could not be continued. Of course, if the rest of New Zealand conformed to the new mode Taranaki would have to play three men in the front row. Mr. T. R. Bourke said that the 3—2—3 scrum would not eliminate the depredations of the wing forward. It would be far worse for the half to have two siderow men coming down on him.
