RISE IN STERLING CONTINUES
SPECULATIVE ACTIVITY EVIDENT FRENCH PREDICT PROSPERITY. British Wireless. Rugby, March 9. In early dealings in sterling in the foreign exchange market to-day the appreciation continued and the rate against th'e United States dollar rose from' 1 yesterday’s closing rate of 3.711 dollars to over 3.77 dollars and against the French franc there was a similar improvement from 94* cents to 904 cents. Speculative activity later dominated the market and the rates fluctuated considerably. Folldwinw the further improvement in the New York exchange rates the price of gold has been fixed at £5 10s 5d per French newspapers, referring to the rise in sterling, predict an era of prosperity in Britain. Le Matin says that the British pound is a great international counter. It became suspect, but resumes little by little its directive role in commerce. This is reviving John Bull,' who is resuming his serenity.
