“In these days, friendship between nations seems to have become paralysed,” said the Rev. Owen Williams, preaching at Christchurch on Sunday. “After the Great War the world _ was covered with nations which cherished their past glories, and became insular and sectarian in their outlooks. should be avoided in pride of race. This state of society, which so precariously totters on the brink of a disaster, can be restored in one way only —mutual service and friendship, and sacramental acts which speak more than words.” Years ago an effort was made to establish oysters in Evans Bay, Wellington, on a commercial basis, but the promises were not fulfilled. Evidence that the oysters still survive, and have spread to a small extent, is given, by the fact that divers from time to time secure a few oysters some distance from the spot where they were first installed. The spawn has evidently travelled with the tides. The-presence of ,foreign matter in the bays round Wellington makes it advisable that locally-taken shellfish should not be eaten raw.

The progress of the dairy industry in the Gisborne district during the past five years has been remarkable, for in that time the output has been more than doubled, rising from 700 tons in 192526 to 850 tons the following year, 1200 tons in 1927-28, 1325 tons in 1928-29, and 1500 tons in 1929-30. Last season was the first for many that a new record had not been established. The abnormally dry conditions were mainly responsible, but the production slipped back by less than 100 tons. Judging by the present progress, this season’s production should be 200 tons more than, that of 1930-31.
