HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Waitara, Workers’ Hospital Association was held on Tuesday evening, when the attendance was small. Mr. T. B. Ewens, who was responsible for the inauguration of the scheme .12 months ago, presided. The chairman said, the attendance was disappointing in view of the fact that more members were required to carry on the scheme. After explaining the scheme in detail, he stated that owing to the small membership last year the Taranaki Hospital Board expressed a desire not to renew the agreement. After an interview' the Hospital Board, however, agreed to renew the scheme providing the membership was considerably increased. The chairman stressed the necessity for members to endeavour to obtain new members. last year the membership was 58, and so far 17 new members had been gained this year, but there were about 20 eld members who had not so far renewed and .-he hoped they would do so. Some people, he understood, were under the misapprehension that the scheme was confined to freezing workers. That was not so. Any worker living in the district on payment of an annual fee of 25s ior males and 17s for females could join. Replying to questions the chairman said the annual charge could be paid by instalments if members desired, but no benefits could be, obtained unjtil the full amount was paid. Mr. Ewens was re-elected chairman and Mr. Geo. Bird secretary. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to Mr. Ewens for his valuable work for the association and £1 Is was voted him for expenses he had incurred. STATIONMASTER DEPARTS. The Waitara railway staff, together with representatives of Thos. Borthwick and Sons and business people, gathered on Monday to bid Mr. L. V. Carmine, stationmaster, farewell on the eve of his departure to his new post at Hawera. Mr. W. Easton on behalf of the railway staff expressed regret at Mr. Carmine’s departure. Mr. Carmine had gained the esteem and confidence of those under him. Mr. Easton made the presentation of a smoker’s companion and a crystal bowl for Mrs. Carmine and wished them scucess in their new sphere. Messrs. Blair and Brookes on behalf of the staff and Messrs. M. Sampson and T. Ferguson on behalf of the freezing works also expressed regret and wished Mr. Carmine success. Similar remarks were made by several business people. Mr. Carmine expressed regret that he was leaving Waitara, where in his stay of only 12 months he had made many friends. He was proud of the good fellowship that had always existed between the staff and himself. He also said the best of good feeling had also existed with the business people. He thanked

them for the presentation to himself and , ■ Mrs. Carmine. A smoke concert was held and an onjoyable evening spent.
