MOUNTAINEER DEPARTS
FAKEWELT. TO MR. J. PALMER. Members of the Mount Egmont Alpine and Ruapehu Ski Clubs met,, at Hawera last night to farewell one of their stalwarts, Mr. J. Palmer, who has been transferred to the Department of Agriculture at Hastings. Warm tributes were paid to the cheerful spirit and enthusiasm of Mr. Palmer by various members, and he received three presentations. On behalf of the departmental office staff Mr. H. R. Denize presented Mr. Palmer with a flask. While sorry to lose a colleague and friend, said Mr. Denize, he was glad Mr. Palmer had received promotion. Mr. E. Marchant, Wanganui, asked Mr. Palmer to accept a large photograph album from Ruapehu Ski Club members. The secretary, Mr. S. Rennie, also spoke, mentioning the enthusiasm of Mr. Palmer in his work for the club. Mr. Palmer was then presented with a framed photograph of Mount Egmont by Mr. L. O. Hooker, on behalf of the members of the Alpine Club. The keen interest and active assistance of the departing member liad been an inspiration to the others in the club, said Mr. Hooker. Mr. Rod. Syme paid a tribute to the spirit of Mr. Palmer on the trips they had undertaken. Replying, Mr. Palmer said he regretted leaving Hawera, but said he would always have the warmest recollections of his stay in. the .district, and of his mountain friends.
