FACILITIES FOR SPORT. The. facilities offering in Hawera for the enjoyment of recreative sport are numerous and the fact that the town has produced a number of athletes who have ranked with the Dominion’s best proves that the young and old fully avail themselves of the opportunities afforded. Some of the greatest footballers who ever donned an international jesrsey first took the field in Hawera, while m the athletic field events a boy from the town held a world’s record within the . last few years. But while those enthusiasts who paved the way for the practice of , different pastimes must naturally feel proud of their champions, they must feel just as satisfied when they see the young and old alike out in the open air enjoying a game and the respite from daily work. The Egmont A. and P. Associations oval off Camberwell Road has seen some thrilling club, representative and interschool Rugby football and many interesting athletic meetings in the summertime. King Edward Park close by resounds to the different sounds that accompany hockey and Association football in the winter, and cricket, tennis, croquet and bowls in the warmer monthsAt the other end of the town are fine croquet lawns, bowling greens -and tennis courts, while, down towards the sea, golfing enthusiaete all th® year round play on one of the fineqt courses in the r province. Municipal baths in Albion Street are a continual source of delight to those people who cannot find the lime to make the trip to the beaches alonw the coast. Short and long range rifle” shooting has its patrons, and a gun club provides members with good sport. For followers of form, the Egmont Racing Club conducts some excellent meetings, while a very keen alpin® club makee full use of Egmont A enows.
