CANCELLING OF WAR DEBTS

BRITISH SHIPPER’S ADVOCACY. APR. SHAW’S OUTSTANDING SPEECH By Tel®Eraph—'Frees Assn. —Copyright. London, February 17. Moving at the annual conference of the Chamber of Shipping a motion supporting. Britain’s proposal to cancel war debts and reparations, and urging that the Ottawa discussions keep in mind that the exchange of goods was the basis of international trade, and the desirability of reducing and not increasing trade barriers, the Hon. Alexander Shaw, deputy-chairman of. the P. and O. Company, in another outstanding speech, emphasised the fact that the motion went to the root of the troubles keeping 2,000,000 tons of British shipping idle. (Mr. Shaw recalled that during previous wars Britain gave free subsidies to Continental friends and had not sought repayment, but in the Great War had substituted repayable loans on which to-day’s problems rested. Personally he knew that each shell his battery had fired had created a gold debt to America, plus a German reparation debt to France. .(Mr. Shaw held a commission in the Royal Marine Artillery during the war.)
