URENUI NEWS

MEETING OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE. BRIGHT PROSPECTS FOR THE YEAR. The monthly meeting of the Urenui school committee was held on Wednesday night. The following members were present: Messrs. L. Rattenbury (chairman), C. W. Henwood, H. L. Taylor and S. A. Managh, Mr. L. C. Bicheno (headmaster) in his report stated that the school reopened with a very fair attendance considering that whooping cough had been prevalent during the vacation among many of the younger children. Thera were still about a dozen who had not recovered. The last term of 1931 ended with a roll of 76 and an average attendance of 69.9; and of these five had left school or were attending secondary schools, one had left the district and three others were attending neighbouring schools. Four .additional pupils had been admitted since the holidays and the roll was now 71. Since resuming the children had 'been nearly all promoted to higher classes—all except two of the school’s own pupils who had had much sickness during the year, and several others who had been handicapped through removal from school to school during the year. Much had already been done since resuming, towards clearing the garden plots and cutting weeds around the new-1 ly planted hedges. The prospects for the coming year were brighter than they had ever been, and with reasonable freedom from sickness, the school had a better chance of progress than it had had for years. The headmaster on behalf of the teachers thanked the committee and parents for their help in connection with, the schodi concert. Owing to the examinations having been held near the end of the term, very little time had been al» rawed for the preparation of the concert, but it had been a great success. Mr. Bicheno thanked those who had given prizes and conducted the competitions which substantially aided the school funds. GENERAL AND PERSONAL. Fine weather favoured the Okoke school picnic on the Urenui beach on Wednesday. The tide, was not very suitable for swimming in the river, but the children were well provid/ed for with races on the beach and an enjoyable time was spent by all. The death occurred at Wanganui recently of Mr. Martin Hearne, who was well known and highly regarded in the Urenui district.

Interest is being taken in the first annual flower show under the auspices

of the Urenui Presbyterian Church to be held in the Urenui hall on Friday. Numerous entries have been received and the .committee is working hard. ’
