WESTERN DIVISION TENNIS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Playing in the Taranaki Association’s Western Division tennis competitions at Pungarehu on Thursday Kaponga defeated Pungarehu by 12 sets, 108 games, to 4 sets, 87 games. The scores were, Pungarehu players mentioned first:—, Men’s Singles: R. Fleming lost to R. AlcCarthy 6—9, W. Priest lost to C. Harding 6—o, J. Priest beat B. Hammersley 9 —6, B. Brophy beat M. Malone 9—5. Ladies’ Singles: Aliss C. Brophy lost to Mrs. Hammersley I—7, Miss Al. Brophy lost to Miss O’Neill 3 —7, Aliss D. Smith lost to Miss Anderson 6—7, Miss L. Giihooly lost to Miss H. Guy 3—7. Men's Doubles: Fleming and Priest lost to McCarthy and Harding 6—9, Brophy and Priest lost to B. Hammersley and Alalqne 6—9. Ladies’ Doubles: Alisses Brophy beat Airs. Fine weather favoured the Alethodist Sunday school picnic, which was held on Thursday amid the pleasant surroundings of Te Ngutu Park. Considering counter attractions there was a good attendance of children and their parents and friends. Private cars and lorries conveyed the holiday-makers. The time was pleasantly occupied in games and sports of which an enjoyable feature was the impromptu cricket match, ladies versus men. .The children’s races were under the supervision of Alessrs. N. C. Davies (Sunday school superintendent), W. Marr and J. Taylforth. Refreshments were taken in the cool shade.

The committee expressed themselves as delighted with the arrangements made by the caretaker, Air. Revell, who had the fire going when the picnicers arrived, and evpressions of pleasure were heard on all sides with the general arrangements at Te Ngutu for the comfort of the picnickers. The banner oempetitions of the Western division of the Taranaki Bowling Centre were continued in fine weather on Saturday afternoon, when the Kaponga, B team by the small margin of five points defeated Pihama in a very close and interesting game The last heads were the deciding factors Should the Pihama team in the last match of the second round on Saturday next succeed in beating the Warea B team this will place these two teams level, and a playoff will be necessary, but if Warea B are successful they will win outright the division honours Following are the details: — P.
